i have a 1978 85 hp no power trim Evinrude. i have owned this for a year now and love it. when i first got it, it ran rough, but after tracking down a pinhole fuel leak on the fuel lines and replacing it,it ran just fine until today.
on the last day of my vacation, (at least it was the last day,not the first) i stopped the boat on the way into the marina to bring in the tube after successfully having made my son wipe out several times on the tube. I then tried to restart it, but there was nothing, not a sound at all when turning the key.
i started with what little mechanical knowledge i had to track down the problem. checked the battery charge, it was fine. checked other electrical items , fish finder, lights, and they were fine. took off motor cover, pushed the key in to see if the choke would respond, nothing. so with my best guess, i am assuming that there is a broken wire or corroded wire or connection between the key switch and the starter solenoid. i used an old trick i used to use for cars, i turned the key to "run" position and then i used a pair of pliers to jump the post on the solenoid. that worked great, and she fired right up and ran normal. after getting back to the boat ramp,i tried to shut it off and start it again, and just as before , nothing.
im no expert, but im thinking since my electric choke and starter are both not working at all when i turn the key, it must be a ground wire somewhere, otherwise either my choke or starter would work. so with this in mind, and assuming i am correct about it being a ground wire, can anyone suggest where i might start to look for the break in the ground?
thanks allenx1966
