Hello Everyone,

Last fall I picked up a broken 60HP motor (no ignition), the motor plate says it is a 60ESL70.
It should be a long shaft electric start motor from '70.
The lower gear case was replaced before, it has a different color. The motor looks certainly quite short.
I am wondering if those motors for the long shaft version had a section between the gear case and the leg? Mine does not have one.

Thanks, Peter

Re: Motor length

Thanks for that data!
I did measure the distance from the top of the transom (bracket) to the center of the prop shaft, I have that data somewhere.
The motor is buried in the garage, and it is winter here.

I am still wondering if they used an additional section for the long-shaft version or just used a longer upper leg.

Thanks, Peter

Re: Motor length

Many motors can be converted form long to short or vise versa. However, it does require some new parts. You'll need a longer drive shaft, lower shift rod, longer copper water uptake tube(s), and lower unit exhaust housing extension, but the job itself is pretty straight forward. You want the cavitation plate found right above the prop to be level, or slightly higher than the keel of the boat. Measurements are usually taken from the transom clamp to the cavitation plate, rather than the center of the prop shaft. Good luck.

go to ********** (boats dot net) then 'parts' and search your model/gearcase. It'll show if there's an extension for longshaft models.. good luck!

Re: Motor length

Thanks for the pointers!
I did see the web site at marineengine.com where one can look up parts and diagrams based on engine number.
I do not want to convert the engine, just trying to find out if possibly with that newer gear case the motor also got shortened too.
I guess I just have measure it...

Thanks, Peter

Re: Motor length

Just a quick update.
I checked the part numbers for the ES and ESL engines, they have different part numbers for the upper legs. So there is no insert between the upper leg and gear case.
