Re: motor locked up!

erie-guy, i've been trying to break it loose by the crankshaft pully but no go yet! i'm useing kerosene to soak the cylinders right now, and the kerosene is soaking down to the crankcase on two of the cylinders. i think the other two cylinders that are holding the kerosene in them are the problem cylinders, as for the head. i will have it resurfaced and checked for cracks, i guess i'll keep soaking the cylinders. believe me, the last thing i want to do is pull the block out! thanks for the reply :)

catfish1
You're Wasting your Time......

The motor Has to come out.. Even If you can save the block, You'll need to pull the pistons to hone the cylinders... You Can't do this In the Boat.... And, How are you going to Inspect the Bearings ????? How are you going to replace the Rings ????
The Motor HAS to Come Out......

Re: motor locked up!

your probably right bondo. even if i get it freed up, i still wont know the condition of the crankshaft, i was going to hone it with each piston at the bottom of the cylinder. i guess i'll pull it, if for anything. piece of mind!
the lifters and all had water around them but they were not rusted at all, so i was thinking the crankcase would have the same protective oil coating as well, but like you say. i need to look!

Re: motor locked up!

well i didnt pull it today, but i did get the pistons freed up! i can turn it by the pully now. i think i can get the oil pan off without pulling the motor, i can raise the motor quite a bit with the tilt, and it has a very deep bilge area to get access underneath. i'm hoping i can get a look at the crank, if its rusted i will pull the motor, if no rust i will leave it in and start focusing on the cause of the problem, which i believe is a cracked intake/exhaust manifold, according to the repair manual water runs through the manifold.

many thanks for your input bondo! hey, is this a good mod motor? here's a few pics!

this one is of the starter! i suspect that the bilge area filled with water and got into the motor that way, i cant think of any other way the starter could fill with water(it was full of water!). but notice the wire for the brush is broke, kinda explains why the motor wouldnt turn over! ;)

Re: motor locked up!

Hello
Have the head magnafluxed and at least have the vales checked to make sure none are rusted and stuck. pressure test the manifold. dont hone the cylinders. if you do there is no way to remove all of the grit and dust it will leave behind. if the walls need cleaning use a green meanie and Bon-ami clenser with oil.just by looking at the crank you can tell nothing about the bearing surfaces. if your not going to take it out and tear it down I would not go to all the trouble to pull the pan
the front and rear oil seals are just to hard to put back on with the engine in place.just my opinion from a couple years experience :) :)
I saw a post of an engine from an ebay site, looked like a saltwater corroision special. I may be biased but I get at least 20 people a year telling me it cant be blown I just bought it.
Good luck and keep posting :) :)

Re: motor locked up!

the good news is: i only pumped 1/2 gal of water from the oil pan, as you know water goes to the bottom and oil is on top. so the engine was not run with a water leak, nor did the water leak come from a cracked block or something of that nature. the cyl wall are in good shape(just need a cleaning) the crankshaft is alright because it never had water on it, the head can be sent out to be cleaned up & checked for cracks. to my figure i will need a head gasket, starter, and send the head out to a shop, and it should be ready to put back together.

cat fish dont be a tight arse. like i was. pull it out and check it out completly the disipointment aint worth it. first day on the water ten minutes out and knock knock. dam i should of checked the bearings. not to mention possible danger. will you be really confident whith the engine to use the boat to its full potentional. ie long haull trip i tried saveing bucks whith a leg. long storie ended up whith buying new leg after wasting 1500 bucks like some one says on the bottom of there post. do it right the first time. good luck ya gunna need it greg :D :D

I don't want to come across rude but catfish Idon't know where you are planning on going in your boat but Iwould not waste my time with this engine. buy the time you get this motor into any trust worthy condition you will have spent more money and time than you can imagine. Look its a 18 foot boat get a coversion bracket and buy yourself an o/b motor if you want to keep the boat other wise buy a long block and be done. Trust me

Re: motor locked up!

You WILL need to pull the crank and check the bearings and journals. Even if the WATER never touched the crank, rest assured the moisture inside the engine did! You've gone this far, don't stop now. Your engine "looks" pretty good, finish it up by doing the crank and bearings as well. It will not be that expensive to polish the crank and replace the bearings.
