I'm getting ready to take the engine off of the boat to replace the rotton boards on the back end of the boat (1965 Sears aluminum boat with the Sears (West Bend) 12Hp motor clamped onto it.

The problem.... The boat, over the last 25 years, sometimes was full of rainwater, and the clamps would be submerged... so now, naturally, the screws that hold the clamp to the boat are rusted out, and I think I'm going to have to cut them off with a hacksaw.

The question: The clamps/brackets are die-cast, and stamped with the name "Alcoa" and a number: 145532. Would Alcoa have been the manufacturer of those brackets/clamps? If so, are those things still available? Or are there replacement mounts/clamps that can be purchased?

Thanks,
Rex

Re: Motor mount clamps

I would treat them like like rare sculptures, Rex. They made them yes, but no longer, and haven't fo at least 10years. Before cutting them,I would check out every source in town and on the net, to locate new or used replacements.
Have them on-hand before taking a hacksaw t them.
I would get a Dremmel drill with a rotary wire brush, and lots of rust-eater.
Work them off gradually, back and forth, soaked with rust buster.

Thanks!

Before taking any drastic, un-reversable action with it, I'll do what I can to have what I need before starting!

Rex

Hey, Rex,
There's some stuff called "Kroil".
I hadn't thought about the stuff in years but someone here on the board mentioned it a while back, and it's good dinkum. It's a penetration oil and it'll get into places a burgler can't. Kroil has a web page. Send your search engine looking for it and they can tell you where to get it locally.

Cut, cut, cut. That's all those surgeons know.

c/6

hooty

hooty

Re: Motor mount clamps

Thanks Hooty,

I'll give 'em a call to see if there's a local dealer of their products here in the N. Dallas area.

So far, WD-40 hasn't done it, and I have been spraying it 2x daily for the last week, in hopes of getting the rusty screw/bolts to work loose.

Looks like the clamp itself is still in good condition, so should just need to replace the screw that goes in/out to tighten it to the boat's rear. Let's just hope it's a standard thread! haha

Thanks again,
Rex

Best stuff i've ever used to break rust down is "B'Laster PB" catalyst. Auto parts stores usually have it. Or 1-800-858-6605. The longer you wait the deeper it will penetrate.
Try it before cutting. ;)

Re: Motor mount clamps

I now have a spray can of aerokroil on the way to me. Should be here in a few days to try.

BTW - Kano Labs is running a special - I'm getting a free can of Silikroil with the order (same as aerokroil, but with a silicone additive)

Rex

Re: Motor mount clamps

Rex; I hope you get it with KROIL but if you shouldn't try "sears parts page". Type in your serial and model #'s and tell them what you need.Fone-Man turned me onto this about a month ago and in two weeks I had parts for an old Gamefisher. Good luck with the clamps. Happy Boating, Hal :D

P.S. I use PB Blaster all the time now and you can get it at most any parts house.

Re: Motor mount clamps

Hootie,

I ordered mine online and it worked fine... but theor online order page needs some professional attention to it, if you know what I mean.

Harrison,

Yes, I tried their online parts ordering at Sears, as well as called & spoke to a human. No dice for my older model. Threads on the big bolt/screws are literally falling apart with rust, and just need to be able to break it loose so I can try to replace the screw/bolt thingie for the clamp - IF I can find one with the same threading size. I don't anticipate a big problem, but I'm at a standstill with my progress until I can get the motor off the boat.

Thanks,
Rex

Yo Rex Smith....

Don't be so worried!! wrap some .035 brass shimstock around the threads (3-4 wraps)
get a good grip on those babies with a vise-grip and work them back and forth. if they're unmoveable, cut them off!! When you get the brackets removed from engine, heat them with a torch and they'll come. Even if you break em, they weld aluminum every day!Don't sweat about the threads, they make heli-coils every day. If worse comes to worse, a piece of stainless rod can be threaded to a standard SAE thread to match available heli-coils.

Sometime the tension and worrying just isn't worth it!!!!
GOOD luck!!!

:)
