I'm having problems removing my motormounts on my 40hp tohatsu outboard...

I took off the nuts and can't get the motormounts to budge..

I tried to hit the thread ends of the bolts to drift them out but there are not moving....Am I supposed to pry them out?

Also, if you look at the elementary pic I put arrows the the 2 places that i'm trying to get to. I have a lot of play in those 2 areas (1/4 inch) and am not sure what needs to be replaced in there...

Appreciate any help in advance, this is the first time i've torn an outboard down this far.....Warren

Re: Motor Mount Problem

The areas you indicate seem to show the swivel bracket (for steering), rather than the rubber mounts themselves. The bushings may be worn. Regarding stainless mount bolts... they will develop crud where they pass through the aluminum castings, and may be a bit recalcitrant when you want them to come out. If the rubber mounts seem solid, check in the parts catalog, available on Elvin's website at http://www.internetoutboards.com/PartsCatalogMenu.htm

Re: Motor Mount Problem

Thanks Paul....

I did find the part # on elvin's site but am still having a hard time getting to the Swivel Bracket bushings...

I can't seem to get the motor mounts off....

I've been doing a little bit of prying and I am getting some movement but am not sure....Do the motor mount bolts need to be drifted out a little before pulling?

Or should it just come straight out as it is? I want to order everything at once but need to get this apart to see what I need......Thanks

Re: Motor Mount Problem

Looks like the mounts need some more persuasion to come apart. The parts catalog shows how it all goes together (and comes apart), but there is a decent section in the Factory service manual on the mounts as well.

Re: Motor Mount Problem

I had the same problem with my Tohatsu 50D2. As I was stripping the engine I ordered and replaced the 3 nylon bushes in the pivot bracket, however you might be able to tighten the bolts either side of the pivot bracket, one will be counter sunk on the left hand side so try tighting the right hand side bolt. See if this sorts out the play.

As for the engine mount I have replaced both upper and lower mounts. I was advised to use a crow bar to prise the lower mounts away from steering bracket enough to pop the bolts out. This never worked and I ended up having to buy a new bolt to replace the one I had bent.

To remove the mounts and to get to the steering bracket you need to remove powerhead, lower pan, top mounting bracket and finally drive shaft casing. Covered in the service manual, if you go ahead might be worth while replacing your upper and lower mounts at the same time.

Here are some pictures of my tohastu stripped down http://www.rib.net/forum/showthread.php?t=34266&page=3

Re: Motor Mount Problem

Thanks for the reply's...

Yea, I do have my powerhead off and sent it out to the machine shop yesterday to get bored out...

I now have 10 days until it gets back to replace/rebuild as much as I can....

My budget on this job is very close to maxed out. I'm trying to re-use as many parts as possible...

I'm going to go out and do a little prying and tapping on those motormount bolts....

I'm glad I didn't order the bushings yet, I may not get to them....

Re: Motor Mount Problem

Had another look at your photo can see where you are trying to get to.

If the powerhead is off your half way there, remove gear secltor rod and the 4 bolts holding the lower pan on and you will be left with this :-

Undo the three bolts on the upper mounting cap and remove nuts if not already done on the two lower mounts. The driveshaft casing will now be free but may need a bit of a shake to remove.

On the bottom of the shaft there is a spring clip, remove this and you will be left with the splined part of the shaft, pull the complete shaft up catching the rubber washers and bushes that drop out.

Job done.

Refit in reverse, its a tight fit to get the driveshaft casing back on may need some gentle force.

Re: Motor Mount Problem

Bobby.....Thanks for the tips...

I got it today...Took 2 of us, me pulling up and away and my buddy spraying lube and turning the bolt, finally got it to budge...

Also busted a bolt head off on the upper mount bracket but luckily there was about 1/2 inch of threads showing and I was able to get 2 nuts on there and ease it out...

Got it apart and i'm going to replace the bushings, they look fine and I do believe most of the "Play" I was seeing is from the spined part of the lower steering/mount, it feels a bit sloppy and I don't think there's anything I can do about it.....
