Motor mount question, Volvo 4-cyl 1983 gas 270 I/O
Restoring a 20 foot cabin model.
Previous owner destroyed interior.
My 4-cyl gas engine does not have any front or middle motor mounts.

The only thing holding it up is the bell housing/transmision do-hicky on the transom.

Ques 1. Can I take it for a short ride in a calm river to check out the engine. (can't wait to get it in the water :D)
Ques 2. Anyone have a good picture of where the mounts should be?

(I'm guessing on the two sides, not front center based on searches I've made.)

The ones with the "bell housing/transmision do-hicky on the transom" is all that was used. No front or side mounts.

OK Still learning here...
The engine has B230 stamped on it.
The heat exchanger ( raw water to ingine water) had a screen housin on the right when facing the stern.
There is NO oil cooler.
So I'm thinking it's a 230 (or 230A).

The engine HAS a motor mount hanging from the bottom right, not attached and many inches from the fiberglass bilge.
So looks like I'll be doing some boat building in that area to get the front mount bolted.

Not exactly. There was a model 230, but it didn't exist in 83. B230 is the type block used, not the Volvo Penta model designation.
Being as you have an 83, you probably have the AQ125 engine. If you look on the block just aft of where the starter mounts, you may find the tag that gives the model of your engine.

It doesn't mount on the fiberglass. The mount is attached to the transom shield, and fits in a socket in the flywheel cover.
That model did not use front motor mounts.

Most likely the engine was swapped or made by Dr. Frankenstein!
Wires hanging all over, bolts missing and loose, brackets holding up nothing, etc.

When I look at the Penta Volvo official site for parts, the 230A pictures match my engine.

Raining too hard right now to take pictures.
I could not find the brass tag on the engine, there is a tag just inside the transom on the stern drive.

I've got to get it sorted out soon, the raw water system leaks like a sieve, and water seeps out the side of the exhaust manifold.
I've found lots of good tips for the raw water system on the WEB.
Luckily, the exhaust manifold and raw water pump seem pretty common to all the older 4-cylinders.

Thanks for the replies!

Dennis,

In case you want some photos on the "stock" front motor mounts for a "B230" block (sorry, photos are old and taken for another purpose, but maybe they can help guide you a bit). BTW, these are from an AQ171C (same block as you have but different head, DOHC, and volume).

It also "sounds" like you have a transplant from a an automobile. Lots of good info here, and you will find out that a "marinized" Volvo Penta engine, (based on the same "B230" block that was the base engine in all Volvo cars for years), are indeed a bit different compared to the ones used on the dry. A recent thread is find here: http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=503981
