Hi everyone,
1985 Mercruiser V8 260hp. I'm going to be pulling the motor out soon and have a question about the motor mounts. I see that there are 3 different ways to unbolt them 1. Take out the bolts that go into the stringers. 2. Take out the bolts that go into the block. 3. take off the top nut that is in the middle of the mount (between the bolts that go into the stringer).

Which way am I supposed to undo the motor mounts? I don't want to mess up my alignment, but I don't want to weaken the screw holes in the stringers... but I'd think it would be a lot harder to reinstall the new block by having to screw the mounts back into the block upon re-installation.

If I just undo the top nut, but don't change the positioning of the bottom nut, will my alignment stay ths same?

Re: Motor Mount

Make it easy on yourself. Remove the lag bolts holding it to the stringer. But no matter which way you go, you will need to check your alignment when you put the engine back in. Make sure the mounts can be adusted up and down and not rusted solid before you put it back in.

ya, that way ya can check to see if yer stringers are good too. if yer lag bolts don't take goin back in yer sol. mine didn't on my last boat. but ya might as well find out now cause it seemed to me no point in doin any engine or drive work with spent stingers as was in my case......and ya may not be sol. just up for some extra work, if they don't take.......as for the alignment. yer gonna have to do that anyways ya look at it or do it. ya've disturbed it's location and need to be sure it's in proper alignment goin back together.......
