Motor Mount

I have an 70 in-line6 merc in a 19' Gulfstream. I was wondering if the motor mount to the front stringer is just lag bolted down? It looks as someone before me re-did the stringers and I want to know if this is right. If this sounds to be right, both lags are backing out and I need to figure out how to fix this.
Thanks

Re: Motor Mount

Normally, lag bolts are what holds the mount to the boat if it's fiberglass and wood.

Re: Motor Mount

If you want to fix the holes (if the blocks are not rotten). Get yourself some Oak dowels and 2 part epoxy. Fill the holes and coat the dowels with the epoxy and pound them in. Let dry over night and then re drill the holes so they are tight on the lag bolts.
Did my stripped out holes last year and just got done installing a new motor yesterday. It worked great.

Re: Motor Mount

The dowels is an easy job, just make sure that the underlying wood is still in good shape

Thanks everybody I will do the dowel thing, great idea because the rest of the wood is fine I think the lags just rusted away a bit.

Would something like Marine Tex work for the Dowels?

Yeah, I'm taking pictures of my project as I go along. I'm in the process of re-doing the floor. Do you have a Gulfstream? Because I have a couple of questions about the transom..Let me know. Thanks..Zet

Re: Motor Mount

Check out this link Zetman.

http://www.shareaproject.com/pages/projectTut,p,92,00.html You can double click on the pictures to enlarge them.

Been there, done that. Your mount stringers are probably soaking wet. The good news is that Gulfstream used mahogany for stringers so they probably are not rotted. The mount stringers are a boxed affair. The inner stringer is about 2 1/2" wide, the outer stringer is 1 1/2" wide and there is an 1 1/4" cap over the top of them. There is about a 4 1/2" void in between them, probably filled with foam and just as probably soaking wet.

Your inboard bolts screw into the 2 1/2" inner stringer and your outboard screw goes thru the 1 1/4" cap. Below the outboard screw is the foam.

You can enlarge your inboard bolts, one size (from 7/16 to 1/2") and use a 4" lag. I replaced mine with stainless. B4 you do the dowel bit, I would drill down 4"'s with a 1/4" bit and see the state of the wood that comes up.

I had mine all apart (as you can see in the tutorial) That gave the mahogany time to dry out. I then kept feeding the holes CPES till they quit drinking it in, loaded the holes with 3M 4200 sealant and rammed the lags home. I also reinforced my whole mount stringer system.

If you have any questions, feel free to ask.

Also if you ever run across a salvage Gulfstream, I'm looking for a set of seats with the original fiberglass bases. Don't really care about the condition, I just want them complete.

Re: Motor Mount

I remember from an earlier post you were looking for the seats, I'll keep an eye out here on the west coast.
On the other subject of motor mount and stringers, I'm coming to the conclusion a previous owner re-did alot. I think the best way is to shoot you some pictures your way and have a look. Is the transom of your boat only have wood around the I/O portion only?

Boomyal,
I just checked out your link...you have a V-8, motor mount on the side, right? My in-line 6 has the motor moount on the front of the motor. I really like your pictures.BTW there is a boat just like yours for sale on craiglists..here is a link http://sacramento.craigslist.org/boa/311691289.html

Re: Motor Mount

Yes re the transom. Due to the fact that the early OMC's mounted the whole drive assy to the stringers, the transom carried no load so they did not need a full width reinforced transom.

Shoot the pics. I'll give you my best shot.

You may have the power trim setup that jacked the front of the motor up or down while it pivoted on the rear mounts attached to the intermediate housing.

I had a 18 ftr before I got the the 20. It had the inline six with the trim setup as well. I don't remember what the mount feet for the front looked like. I owned it from '73 to '75, then traded up to the 20 ftr.

I have a friend down in LA that has one like yours. He uses it up at Pine Flat lake, out of fresno.

I'll check out that link. Gulfstreams were popular down in that neck of the woods.

Re: Motor Mount

Yep, looks just like mine. The brown still looks rich in color. Pretty good for such an old boat. My '75 was an electic shif also. I had nothing but trouble with it so I had the next generation drive adapted to it in 1979.
