Motor not peeing

Hi,

I have a 1973 Mercury 650. I'm trying to get the motor running properly. It isn't peeing. I had the flush kit on with the water running and got the boat cranked and it idled for about 10 seconds and then died. A faint white smoke was coming out of the exhaust, but nothing excessive, I don't think. It was a very faint, wispy amount.

I ran weed eater cord all the way back up through the lines and there do not seem to be any obstructions, and a small amount of water was in the line entering into the block, but the water wasn't coming out the pee hole. Probably not enough water.

I'm thinking that either the entire water pump isn't working or I need a new impeller?

I'm learning about outboards here and I have a manual ordered.

I hate to order a part, wait a week, try the part, and find out something else is wrong. I'm tempted to just take it to the shop, but they have a two week wait currently (grrr...).

Got pee. Engine wasn't running long enough to get pee going I think, but I replaced the aging water hoses anyway. Still has a hard time staying running, so I'm suspecting carbs?

Justin,I would strongly recommend a new impeller for your motor, especially since it is new to you and you don't know when it was last replaced. Pretty easy job with common hand tools. Carb removal will be tougher than the clean/ rebuild if you decide to go that route. Go with mercury/quicksilver parts if possible over the aftermarket stuff.

Thanks crappiejig -

I just watched two separate you tube videos on replacing an impeller and it is something I'd definitely feel comfortable with doing.

I do have to say the motor sounds pretty nice.

One more question and I'm done bugging you fine folks for a while -

Where is a good online source for mercury/quicksilver parts for older motors?

If you can't find them here on iboats, then I recommend dougrussell.com or marinepartsexpress.com. Both have schematic lookups of your motor, just need to plug in your serial number.
