Motor not spitting

I recently bought a boat with a 1994 or 1995 johnson 30 horse motor. The motor runs great but the water isn't spitting out of the hole. Alot of foot oil is coming out of the prop and i was wondering if it was a water pump problem or if it had a blockage. Any information would be greatly appreciated. I'm leaning towards a blockage but haven't been able to take the foot off yet to see if it maybe the impeller.

The oil coming out of the prop is most likely unburnt fuel/oil. As far as no water out the tell tail is most likely water pump. You can put a piece of wire up the tell tail hole and see if its blocked. When was the last time the pump was replaced?

Weed wacker line works good too, to use in the tell tail.

Yeah i've done all that no clog either the water pump is out or there is a blockage some where because foot oil was also coming out a hole in the foot of the motor. Might be the impeller but i think i can get a whole complete kit for around 50 bucks. Also at higher RPM it trickles a little which seems to be a sign of it being the water pump. Do you have any other ideas or suggestions?

anytime you buy a second hand motor, ask when the impeller was changed. if they answer anything but yesterday, get and install a new one . impellers are cheap, motors are not. a bad impeller is the number motor killer.

Are you running it on muffs or in a tub?

Yeah i deffinalty need to get the water pump kit with impeller and all. I was running it on muffs and it started to get weak so i cut the motor off and filled up a tub had the foot submerged and then it didn't spit at all. i'm thinking the water pump and impeller will do the trick i was just trying to see if anyones ran into this problem and had it be some type of blockage due to foot oil.

You need to have the water level at least a few inches above the anti-ventilation plate, to me it sounds like you aren't giving it enough water.

While you are working on it change the lower unit oil also, when drained it should be dark or tan but not milky or white, that would mean water intrusion and if the lower needs resealed you may as well do while it is off the engine.

Alright thanks for the info. How exactly do i go about resealing the lower unit? i've tried looking it up? i ordered the water pump kit with impeller and all that. would resealing help with the problem of the oil leaking out one of the water holes on the foot? you know where the foot shoots water out of the holes one of them has oil coming out with a mixture of water? i figured it was possibly just an over flow...

Yeah i took the foot off and the impeller was fried. Glad i ordered the kit. Took some tape and shot water up the motor and it shot right out so no blockages there. Thanks for the help everyone. Hopefully i'll get out on the water before long.
