Motor Pivot Joints

I have a 90hp 1989 Johnson outboard. The steering is very hard. I disconnected the steering cable and I can turn the steering wheel with one finger, so its not the cable. I realy have to push the motor to make it move side to side. I pump greese into the greese fitting for the pivot joints and it comes out the bottom but not at the top. I tried spraying pb blaster in the top, but that does not seem to be doing anything. Any sugestions are appreciated. Thanks

Re: Motor Pivot Joints

There is a seal at the top portion of the swivel bracket that prevents the grease from escaping at that point.

That problem is usually caused by salt gaining entrance to the nylon bushings within the swivel bracket..... salt in back of the bushings, expanding and creating a clamping action upon the steering bracket.

Two cures....... Either go to the trouble to dismantle the entire assembly, then clean and restore to its original new condition.... OR while applying pressure to turn the engine, use a hand held propane tank to heat the top and bottom bushing area. Heat only enough to have the engine turn normally. DO NOT OVERHEAT.

Have your garden hose and a fire extinguisher handy as _ _ _ _ happens (grin).
