Re: motor price
Around here, an engine of that size would sell for pretty cheap, I'm thinking less than $1,000 if in excellent condition.
But, in my limited experience, the local prices for used outboards can vary a lot - what might be found for bargain prices somewhere, might sell for a premium price elsewhere.
For instance, around here, the most sought after used engine seems to be a 15 HP kicker (whatever brand), the 15 often/usually being the same weight as a 10 (i.e. one person can handle it), but more powerful. They sell for a premium price if you can find them. Long shaft (for trolling w/ a big boat) - even more sought after. In comparison, I've seen MANY 25/30 hp engines sell for similar prices to 15's (and even 10's) because they are not nearly as desirable around here, and more likely to be sold used because people buy them and find they really can't comfortably handle putting them on and off their boats.
Another quirk around here is that the midsized engines - say 75 to 125 hp - seem to be "a dime a dozen" and relatively speaking are not valued nearly as much as the larger V4's or V6's (150 and up). Two reasons, I think: one, people buy them in a package and discover they're not as powerful as they need for their family of four, and unload them when they want to upgrade to a 150+ HP.
Therefore, the mid-range are more available and less desireable, thus relatively cheaper. The larger ones are not very oftenfound, are snatched up quickly, and can fetch a good price because of that.
You tend not to bargain shop when you're looking for that good clean 15 hp or 175. You pay what they're asking because you know they'll sell it to the next guy and you won't find another one for a while.
