I have a 1996 johnson 48 spl. The last couple of trips it has been acting up. Sometimes when you try to get on plane it starts to pulse in power. By pulsing I mean it gives like full power then cuts out over and over and over. This pulse is like one power and stall cycle per second. After a while of idling it will act just fine. Do you have any ideas what this might be?

thanks
longshot

Sounds like it may be stuck in SLOW. This stands for speed limiting overheat warning. This is a safety feature fixed into the ignition system to protect the engine from a over-heat. If you shut the engine off, it will reset it's self. Will your engine do that? You could have a faulty heat sensor, blocking diode, or power back. You will need a manual to trouble shoot this problem.

Could also be a fuel supply problem or air getting into the fuel line. When it starts to cut out try to squeeze the bulb in the fuel line. If it smooths out continue troubleshoot fuel problems.
