Hello, I had another thread, but I decided to make a new one because I have more information.

I have a 1973 Ford 302 Engine with a Volvo I/O Motor. This motor has been kept outdoors and was last run empty on gas. It has not been run for several months. Here is the problem. I have to start it in neutral, I pump the throttle 3 times and go 50% Throttle. Then I reduce the throttle to around 25%. Any lower and it quits. It can run for 20 minutes at 25% and it still does this. It is always in neutral (the button that engages the gears for the motor is pulled out). So when the throttle is low, it's no good, so I can't get it into a position to engage the motor ever, unless I start it with 50% gas in gear..... Also the previous owner said he had this problem and had to redo the carb.

With the throttle at "idle" it will not run, it must be at 25% or more. It sounds like it runs around 1500 rpm's before it dies. It should idle at 600.

Here is what I have done:

Verified that the throttle properly moves the throttle on the carb.
Played with the mixture settings, returned to previous setting
Messed with the idle speed settings, returned to previous setting
Removed the carb, took out the bowl and cleaned it out

My next step is to clean out all the jets in the carb completely like the previous owner did. Does anyone have any other ideas?

sounds like the idle ports arent working...does it die quickly or lazily...?

when it does die does it start back up easily or hard...?

Ok, so let say I put the throttle at 30%, it sounds great, at 25% it sounds pretty good, at 24% it starts sounding like it's struggling to go (like my lawnmower when it's tank is runnign out, and I'm running around the lawn because a storm is coming and I dont want to run to the gas station and mow in the storm). Then 23% it'll die over a 5 second period (like my lawnmower when it finally quits when it's out of gas). To start it again I can just throttle up and start it.

Take the carb all the way apart and clean it properly.

Yeah! Running out of gas usually starts sucking the dregs in the tank. They can be throughout the fuel system causing fuel flow restrictions.

Don't just clean out the carb. Clean out the whole fuel supply system. You could end up clogging the carb right back after your first start-up.

Well I guess I better get all those sediments out of the jets and the fuel system (Just wondering, waht happens when sediments make it through the carb and into the engine).

nothing...they are so small that if they make it thru the jets they pass right thru the engine...

you might try pulling the Air-bleed screws out and shooting some Gum-out in them...and blow them out with air...sometimes that works....

your gonna have to spend the time and money. DIY, get a bucket of carb soak. Disassemble the carb completely, soak over night and blow out all passages with compressed air. Can of carb cleaner won't do it. Reassemble closely following the directions and settings. turn out 1.5 turns on the mixture and fire it up. Adjust idle as necessary. 50/50 shot with an old carb. option2, new out of the box carb. Install using the instructions that come with it. Option3, take it to a reputable shop and have the carb rebuilt. No quick fix here, your idle circuit is plugged up.
