I have a 1993 OMC Cobra 5.0. How much time should it take to remove the engine to replace the core plugs? What level of difficulty is the motor removal? I am handy, but I am new to boats. I am trying to figure out if this is something I can do and how much time I should set aside.

Thanks.

Re: Motor Removal Question

If you havr some way to lift, it is not very difficult at all.

You MUST align the engine before reinstalling the drive.

Re: Motor Removal Question

And why are you replacing core plugs? Did you find them laying in the bilge after winter? If so you may have deeper problems!

Re: Motor Removal Question

i am a new boat guy and didn't know I had to winterize when I got the boat. My bad. Anyway i had it checked out and no cracks are present so I think I got lucky (fingers are crossed). I am gonna test it with expandable plugs and then replace them.

Re: Motor Removal Question

when you say not too difficult; can you give me a little more detail? I know I have to disconnect the drive, then lift the motor, then replace the plugs, the put the motor back and re-align. What did I miss? How long should the whole process take?

Thanks.

You may want to investigate further into this before you find out the hard way...

When you say investigate further what is your recommendation?

Re: Motor Removal Question

I just removed my 5.7 from my boat. It took us 8 hours to remove the engine and partially disasemble it. I am guessing it will take you 3 hours to properly remove it. Marking wires, etc...

Thanks. How do you align the motor when reinstalling?

Oh I was just wondering if you looked at the exterior for cracks or did you do some other tests?...or did you have it checked out professionally?...etc

I'd think you'd want to make sure you don't have water in your oil...the expansion plugs are just fine for that

Re: Motor Removal Question

depending on bilge space, you may be able to remove the exhaust manifolds and replace the core plugs without removing the engine.

Re: Motor Removal Question

If we're talking about a Ford 302 (5.0), then you should be able to replace most of the core plugs with the motor in place. The ones behind the motor mounts are the problem. That being said, after you remove your outdrive, you should just have to lift the engine, not remove it. Removing the front motor mounts and putting in the new plugs shouldn't be that difficult. I'd say from turning first bolt to having the engine lifted up 6-inches or so should only take you about an hour.

Re: Motor Removal Question

Very nice. Thanks, I thought it would take much longer.

What about the outdrive? How long should I allow to remove the outdrive? Do I need a lift to remove the outdrive?

Thanks for all your help.
