motor shake

I have a 00 24ft godfrey with a 90hp 2 stroke yamaha. Pulling a tube,knee board, or just sight seeing. Stop, turn the motor off, 2-3 mins, restart and an alarm is sounding. Shut it off, restart alarm still on trying to get back to boat ramp, the motor shakes real bad at 1,000 rpm has a very noticable vibration. Let off, shut off, maybe 1 min, restart then all is fine. No alarm, no vibration? What should I check, or look for? First boat, any thoughts would be great.

If the alarm is a steady buzz, it is telling you the engine is overheating. Do get a stream of water from the tell tale on the engine? If not, it is time for a new impeller. If the tell tale stream is present and strong, it may be a stuck thermostat. What I can tell you is continuing to operate the motor will "kill" and you won't like the cost to bring it back to life. Preventive maintenance is far cheaper than a new/rebuilt engine.

The engine alarm can be a problem with the oil injection system--low oil level in big tank. Usually it's an indication of overheating. Even if you can see the engine "peeing", it's not an indication of the water pump's condition.

Spend $50 or so for a new impeller kit, and see how it performs. Continue to overheat your motor, and you could be in for much more expense.

While you've got the lower unit off, drain the lower unit oil looking for water. Also, you should have the lower unit pressure tested anytime it's off the boat. An engine of your's age often needs a $85 seal kit put in it (2.5 hrs. labor.)
