Just bought a 1989 Lund alaskan with a 89 Johnson 30 hp , the guy told me when you start it and on idle starts the sputter. First time I started it and turned the throttle and then brought it back down to idle it stalled. After that started it again fired right up and sputter a little bit then stopped then would do it again. I was told it might be the rich to lean controls might need to be adjusted, or carb needs to be cleaned.

You need to give it a good carb cleaning. Sounds like crud or old gas gelled in the low speed jet.

Re: Motor sputter

So when I tried changing my gear oil both flat head screws were all messed up on the head. Any suggestions on how to get them off?

If they are buggered too bad you might have to drill them out. You want to drill a very small hole in them and get an easy out to remove them. They are basically a reverse bit. Sears makes a stripped screw removal too. You might look into that.

Thanks I will look into that. Also I had to replace the throttle cable and going to order a new one I didn't know if it was possible to have the engine be and electric start . It's a 1989 Johnson 30hp

Get an impact screw driver and you'll get them out. Forget about the drilling.

Do you know how to measure throttle and shifter cable from console to motor I keep on getting the wrong length . I have a 89 Johnson 30 hp and is there anyway I can start that electrically
