motor stalls upon putting it in gear

I have a merc 260 that stalls when I put it in gear. I just got this boat and I have found that the choke plate on the 4 barrel carb is wired into a certian spot. The motor will start right back up with no problem. After a while i can get it in gear and drive off. I have noticed the volt gauge and techometer drop molmentaraly at the same time even if I do get it in gear. Other then that the boat runs fine. I guess I could try a tune up but not sure this would help. Any inputs would be appreciated. Thanks

just out of curiosity, what is it idling at?

check the shift cable from engine to drive to see if it is stiff.a stiff cable will activate the shift interupter switch and kill the engine.

to answer the questions asked... <br />(1) Im in near Atlanta Ga.<br />(2) The idel speed is 600 rpms<br />(3)I have checked out the cables and found that the cable for forward was not always making the micro switch to engage the forward gear. I adjusted it but its working a little better. I also changed all the spark plug and the ones I took out didnt look too bad, considering 2 of the 8 were AC and the other 6 were Champions. I had the boat out yesterday and opened it up. Top rpms were about 4300. It ran perfect. the adjustment I have done has helped, but could be better. What has me puzzeled is the choke plate for the 4 barrel quadrajet is held in one position with a bread tie. There is a linkage rod hanging there but i cant find were it goes. I wonder if this could be my problem

I tried to adjust the control cables and I got it to go into forward without stalling but the shift lever is hard to push and will not come out of gear.I have to turn the motor off to shift. I guess I got a lot more adjusting to do. I think Ill just change the control cables. what is your option about it... thanks
