Motor Stand

I need to buy or build a motor stand for up to 20hp motor. Anybody have a source or website whre I might buy one or see some pictures of something that I might be able to build myself out of lumber.

I've seen a standard sawhorse with the legs bolted onto 6' 2x4 extensions work well. Cheap and works temporaraly.

Years ago, I built one out of scrap 2x4s in about 30 minutes. Used that thing for 15 years or better. Motor was sold about 10 years ago but the stand is still being used by everyone in the house to hang things, lean things against, etc. I'd take it apart but I'm afraid I'd start a revolt.<br /><br /> Granpa

For outboards of that size I have always set up a 55 gallon drum so I can run it and work on it - unless you have a very long shaft it should sit well above the bottom - I don't know if it is a good idea or not but I sometimes take the prop off so I can check the high rpm end without blowing all the water out of the barrel - fill with freshwater for a rinse out - bolt a board or plywood on the outside or both outside and inside but make sure you do not exceed the width the outboard mount will open - you may have to bend the rim of the barrel a little - if you need to work on the lower part you hang the motor on the outside and the weight of the water should support it - I have done a lot of jerking around to get the lower end off and never had the barrel tip if it is about 3/4 full of water.....

Hello.<br />Get an old wheel of a car or truck.A 3 or 4 foot piece of 2 inch steel pipe.Take a sledge hammer to one end of the pipe until it is flat for about 3 inches and drill 2 holes in the flat area.What you need now is a 6 inch piece of 2 by 8 oak wood.Drill 2 holes in it and screw it on the pipe.<br />Fill the wheel with concrete and make sure your pipe sits vertical in the middle.<br />There you are!!!<br />A very stable stand with a very heavy base that will not capsize.<br />Here you will be able to get to the engine without having some sawhorse piece in your way.<br />If done right you can tilt your engine on this thing without having to worry.<br />I made one for myself with one steel pipe inside a 1/4 inch larger pipe and I can turn my engine around while working at it!!!<br />Once you have one pipe inside the other you can also work with height adjusting holes like a jack stand.<br />Good luck.

I built several...for engines up to 100lbs I used 2x4 type sawhorses from HomeDepot...then modified them by taking the nails out and replacing with screws and bolts. <br /><br />For up to 250lbs size I built one from 2x8s and used 1/4" dia bolts to hold it together. This one is 4' wide for stability.
