Motor Swap??

I may have the opportunity to swap motors on my boat and wanted some input. I currently have a 1991 Johnson 88SPL. The motor is in great condition and runs well. The motor that I am considering is a 1991 Johnson 120. I am not sure how much the change in HP will affect the overall performance of the boat. The 120 runs well and is in the same condiiton that the 88 is in. I think that the controls will match up and there should be no major issue that I can think of......but I just don't know if the change in HP will be a big enough benifit to actually do the swap. Any input would be greatly appriciated.

Happy Boating

The big bore looper has great torque and the full throttle operating range runs 500 RPM higher than your crossflow. It will probably be close to equal on fuel use.

I think the looper would actually use less fuel that the crossflow.

Re: Motor Swap??

OK, so what I'm hearing is that the motor swap would be a good thing. I have a 24' Pontoon boat. Currently, I get about 25 to 27 MPH @ 5300 WOT. What should I expect for top speed?

Another question, Will the controls for the 88 work on the 120????

Thanks for the help.

Re: Motor Swap??

The control and wiring harness should be a direct swap, The transom mounting holes should be the same. The weight will be approximately 80 pounds heavier. Top speed is determined by the design of the boat, so check with the manufacturer.
