Re: motor swap

If both motors have the same features, the wiring should be the same both being OMC. Dunno about the weight, but the 150 is a V6 so it will be a bit heavier. As far as which is the better motor that depends on the boat your putting it on. A 150 may be to big for it. Look up the boat and see whats recomended for max hp. The 150 will have allot more power than the 115.

Re: motor swap

The remote control box wiring harnesses are all the same up through 1995-the big red plug connector. The throttle and shift cable end connections changed around 1979. The V6 will weigh 100 lbs more. Both engines should be hp rated at the crank. The V6 has much more torque than the 115. As such, the V6 has a taller gear ratio in the lower unit. The 84 is the first year for the VRO combination fuel/oil pump. If still functioning, you will have to find a place for the remote oil tank. That V6 will consume a lot more fuel than that 115. You must make sure that all the fuel plumbing to that engine are 3/8" lines and fittings. The normal 5/16" fuel system for the 115 is not the correct size for the V6. If your 77 did not have power trim, your control box will not have a trim switch in the handle-you will have to add one.

It's a good switch. You won't believe the difference in engines when you run the boat with a V6 on it.

Re: motor swap

thats what i thought but i have talked to 3 different boat shops they told me to stay with the 115, said it has better hole shop and i might gain 3 mph is all i would i get going to the 140 plus burn more fuel, why did they even make the 140 if the 115 is better, dazed and confused,im sorry is a 1979 140 not a 1984 150 the guy has wrong title

Re: motor swap

That's a different situation. The boat shops are correct. The 115 will pull just as strong as the 140 out of the hole. When you get to 3500or so, the 140 will start to pull away. An extra 3 mph for the 140 is probably conservative, but not far off. You would have to go up at least one prop size on the 140-that's probably why the holeshots are comparable.

Re: motor swap

You will get more than 3 mph out of bumping up! I think you should get close to ten mph extra out of it

Re: motor swap

Id be a little concerned with the "wrong title" unless he owns both motors you listed. You never know if its stolen or what. Here in SC we have to have a title to get numbers and registration for your boat. GA it dosent matter where you got your "stolen" motor, cause the boat and motor are registered togeather and no title is needed?

Re: motor swap

found out he has a 150 82 model , the reason he wants to trade the motor is a little heavy and lets water backflow into live wells then floods boat, he had a 140 on it but it locked up, there is only 70# difference in motors but he said that was enough to let water in. my boat with the 115 will hit 47 gps what can i expect with the 150 and is it worth it.

Re: motor swap

We don't know what boat you have but if you're hitting 47 with a 115 I sure as heck wouldn't mess with putting a big thirsty many carb having V6 on there!

I agree with this. I have a javalin 378 fish and ski with a 1990 150hp. That thing the way its propped now will go 55ish need to reprop it though. But it sure will drink the gas, i burned 10 gallons last time and barely ran anywhere.

Re: motor swap

The 1750 rangers from that year are only rated for 130hp.

47 is scootin' in a boat that size. I wouldn't want to go any faster personally.. also not worth it due to the much higher fuel consumption imo.

I have a little 16.5' Ranger w/115.. hits about 44mph on the gps... and I think that's pushing it for that boat. Those boats are pretty light; I've gotten air in it more than once at those speeds.. very unnerving. I couldn't imagine pushing it into the 50's.

Re: motor swap

Well on second thought I guess they were a lot heavier in those years.. so that probably helps a lot. My boat (with engine) weighs just at 1000lbs..

Clem - his boat is more day-cruiser-ish.. those rangers had an open bow you could sit in, but still low-profile like a bass boat.
