What position should your motor be in when trailering ? Tilted up, or down ?

Mine has to be up or it will drag on the road. I use clips for the rams for added security.

Down, down, down, unless you want to crack your transom.

But, really, it depends on your rig. Mine has ample ground clearance. If the skeg would be too close to the ground, then put it part way up and use a tansom saver bracket.

As you have just found out, polls can be just plain rediculous unless properly stated. The answer to this poll is IT DEPENDS!!!!!!!!! If the lower unit has 1 foot or more clearance and you don't intend to go off roading, trailer with it down. Otherwise up.

My 3 cyl 75hp evinrude has power Tilt & Trim. I trailer at the point just before the tilt cylinders are just about to engage. So I guess I'm 1/3 way up.

Up for me. Figure the OEM had a reason for designing and installing "trailer tilt" switch!

Like Silvertip stated it depends, if I'm just running to the ramp I just tilt it a little, running down to the Keys I lock it up, there's no right or wrong, every boat is a little different.

Re: Motor Up - OR - Motor Down

most boat/trailer combination cant even come out of the water with the drive leg down....

what your really asking in your question is....."will i hurt my boat by driving with the drive leg up"?.

the answer to that is ......no....if the boat is in good conditition....

if the transom is rotten....you may rip the motor off the back of the boat.

Seriously, who drives with it down? Nobody I know!! Gotta have it all the way up all the time when on the trailer!

I agree with this and didn't vote because the poll is not properly stated. The boat I have now I have to trailer with the motor up or the lower unit would drag. If I had clearance I would triler with it down.

edit: Judging by the original poster's signature I assume he is talking about outboards and not I/O's.

well if you would read your owners man on all 4 stroke outboards it will tell you to store and tow with your motor down, but if you dont have enough clearence then it says to trim up and brace your motor and not to use your tilt lock as a brace, on 2 strokes it doesnt matter how you tow or store it

Can you do damage to the transom if you use a t-saver? I dont see how it is possible

Re: Motor Up - OR - Motor Down

You will not hurt your transom by trailering it up or down (unless the transom is rotten as someone said)
You will not hurt your motor by trailering up, or down if there's enough clearance.
It is not a good idea to trailer, or store, the motor up on just the trim hydraulics; the bouncing and pressure just adds wear. But you can.
One thing about ground clearance: you might have enough to drive around with the motor down but be careful backing in to a space that has a bumper; it might knock your skeg off.
The motor should be stored down to drain the water out. In freezing temps this is imperative. Short term, storing up doesn't matter.
Although on 2/3's of mine I have to trailer up, I will drop the motor most of the way for manuevering in a parking lot, etc. to reduce my length.
You never need a "transom saver" if your transom is solid; in fact, there are good arguments that transferring the "bounce" to the trailer frame is bad for a number of reasons. But it's an endless debate. However, the block-type that replaces the funciton of the tilt lock makes sense to me, since the tilt lock is not the biggest piece of metal. Yet I have never known a tilt lock to bend from trailering.

you always want to store any outboard completely down, doesn't matter if its 2 or 4 stroke. Reason is that most outboards won't drain out 100% of the water if left tilted up, and if you are storing over winter in an area that freezes... bad things can happen!
