motor will not turn over

I have a 1998 Evinrude 25hp, and today I hit a stump at very low speed. The engine instantly died and would not start up again. The starter is throwing into the flywheel but will not turn over the engine. It seems like it is stuck in gear. I can put in nuetral and forward without much effort but when I put the trottle in reverse it feels like the motor is in a bind.

Hi Csteiner<br /><br />Sorry to hear. Have you tried to pull both spark plug wires and turn the flywheel by hand in F/N/R ? Just only turn Clockwise or yau can ruin impeller. Is should be possible to get a better feeling of whats binding. If is feels like gears, next step would be to drop lower unit.

Hey G Dane<br /><br />It is actually a three cylinder so I pulled the plugs and tried turning it over by hand and it would not move.

'Mornin' Scteiner,<br /><br />have you gat a manual yet?<br />sounds like the lower took a powder.<br /><br />Follow the manual, drop the lower and double-re-confirm your above findings.<br /><br />Then, it sounds like you'll be digging into the lower to replair/replace the damage.<br /><br />Good Luck

Did you check the shear key in the flywheel? Also if you did shear the key, it will not spark or it might have eratic spark because it will be out of time.
