Motor will only go in forward

Have a 2000 model Honda 50hp 4 stroke. My motor was working fine starting normally at the start of the boating outing. It shifted fine went forward and in reverse no problem. Then all of a sudden after seating a while I decided to move my boat to a different spot on the lake. The motor started fine i put it in reverse to back out of the spot i was in. The motor did that fine but then i go to put it in forward and it keeps on going in reverse in the forward position. So i cut the motor off and let it set awhile. Started up no problem starting. So i put it in the forward position and it went forward. Then to see it the motor went i reverse i switched it to reverse and we were still in the forward gear with the gear shifter in the reverse position. So I need some help to figure out what the problem is how to fix a motor that just goes in the forward position if the gear shifter is in forward and reverse? Help Please
