motor will run if choked

i have a 1982 johnson 115 hp outboard. I just got done rebuilding the fuel pump. I am pretty sure everything is put back together correctly! Anyway, I tried to crank it and it will only run if I keep the choke pushed in. It only runs for about 10 seconds but it runs. Any idea on why it won't idle?

Poor fuel delivery from carb to cylinders is my first avenue.
Do you know why it dies after 10 seconds; fuel starvation or flooding with the choke applied?
After its run for the 10 seconds, pull the plugs and see if they are wet with fuel or nice and dry.
Why did you rebuild the fuel pump? What were the original symptoms?

If you have never changed your fuel lines you probably broke peices off when you were messing with the fuel pump and they plugged up the carbs, I have a had apeice of old hose block the inlet to a carb and it had a similar problem.

I would start with new hose from as close to the tank as you can get to the carbs and a carb clean and get an inline filter in it at least.

It almost has to be a carb problem if it ran before and all you did was the pump.

The engine is not getting enough fuel. What happens if you constantly prime the fuel hose bulb? Will it run then?

I bought a rebuild kit, rebuilt it, but I don't think i am flooding it. I will check the plugs after i try it again. I pulled the carbs off and cleaned them real quick after I thought I may be flooding it and they seemed fine. Does anyone know where I can get an exploded view of my fuel pump? it's not in my manual.

Also, it won't idle so I can't run back to squeeze the bulb. I will try it with my wifes help and let yall know.

i cleaned everything again. After trying to crank it a few times, i checked the plugs and they seam fine. i did try to crank it a few times with different plugs out and it tries to crank better than when all the plugs are in... as in i don't have to choke it as much. the lines seem fine... I dont know what to try. I almost want to buy a new fuel pump but i don't know!

aslo, i did try to prime the ball while it was cranking/cranked. It had no effect. but choking did.

I have owned it for little under a year. When i got it, it would die at WOT. I cleaned out the gas tank and put fresh gas in it and it worked GREAT for about 2 months. it slowly started getting worse and worse again. I cleaned and rebuilt the carbs and it helped out a little. I filled up the tank almost all the way with fresh gas. Then, this recent thing came up and I couldn't crank it up at all. When i did choke it, a milky liquid was coming out of the carbs. Turns out, I had close to 3 gallons of water (mixed with gas/oil) in my gas tank!! THAT WAS WHY IT WOULDN'T CRANK!! I got it all out, rebuilt carbs again, and it cranked right up! First time!! I havent taken it to the lake but i am positive that it wouldn't crank because of all of the water! I guess the gas that I filled it up with was bad and had a ton of water in it! i feel bad for everyone else also!
