1986 85hp force. Finally got it running, now it won't shut off. Checked continuity at switch and terminal board between blue and white wires and everything is ok. If you turn the switch off and touch the motor it will shock the crap out of you and kill the motor. Any ideas?

Re: motor won't shut down

There is a black wire coming from my harness at the ignition switch end should that be hooked to the terminal board under the dash? Could that be my problem? Forgot to mention this is a Bayliner.

It looks like the black wire you are talking about comes from the starter relay and goes to the bottom terminal of the block under the dash. This looks to be a ground wire. Not for sure

sounds like YOU were the ground there -- Means you need to close that ground --

How? Should the blue on the terminal board be grounded to the motor somehow?

The blue goes just above the black. The color codes from top to bottom are as followes,
Yellow
Purple
White
Green
Orange
Red
Blue
Black

Re: motor won't shut down

Checked terminal board at motor and all wires are good. I had motor running last night, turned the key off and used a jumper wire from the blue on the terminal board to the block and it still won't shut down. could it be bad cd modules? Could it be that the cds are not getting good ground from the mounting plate? Would it hurt if I ran a wire from the plate to a good ground?

to shut off a motor you have to ground the ign coil?
my force 50hp has a brown wire off the coil that has to be hooked up and grounding right to work
if they are off the wire block it wont shut down with the key
goodluck

Re: motor won't shut down

All three coils are independently grounded to a metal mounting plate that is mounted on rubber bushings. Are the bushings for vibration or to isolate the ground on mounting plate.

Re: motor won't shut down

There is a black wire that goes from the top back side of the plate you are talking about that the coils are grounded to, it should go to a bolt on the block of the motor for ground. I have an 87 85hp like yours and that is where mine is grounded. Hope this helps.
Bob

I don't remember seeing that wire or a place for it, but I will figure out something. If the motor wasn't getting a good ground you wouldn't think it would start???? Hopefully that fixes it. thanks.
