My 1977 70hp evinrude died on me a couple months ago, and it was going to cost mre to fix than it was worth. Yesterday I bought a 1990 90 hp evinrude. I hooked it up to my boat with the help of the guy that I bought the motor from. it was getting dark, so we called it a night (late start) and this morning I went to finish off what was left. I Started the motor, and it seemed to rev a bit high, but i'm sure thats an easy adjustment, the biggest problem is I can't shut it down. I panicked and grabed a rag and pulled the plug wires, (all 4) till it finally died. I thuoght it might be the ground, so I cleaned up the connection from the controls, and tried again. Still won't stop. I came in here to do a search to find else if anyone else was having similar problems, and read about people having to choke the engine(why didn't I think of that) :D , and I think I will go see if that works cause at least I might be able to still go out today.

Background info: the motor started and stopped fine 2 weeks ago when the previous owner took me out on his boat, and when we hooked it up, we used my old controls cause they all seemed to fit and work. I would appreciate any sugestions............thanx for reading

Re: motor won't shut off

I would not try to run the motor just yet. Chokeing the motor out mite work if the choke or selnoid is working corectly. But if its not she just mite go....BANG on ya.

Iam guessing its something to do with the power pack. Their a black and yellow wire that controls the shut down from your key switch.

But dont trust my memory here, WAIT till one of the guys that has exeperince with your size motor.

DONT mess around with it till you get it fixed rite. Because it can run away and destroy its self quicker than a heat attack.

Good Luck!

lol..............too late.just got back from outside, and the choke didn't work, infact, I'm not sure that it is choking at all. I could tell on my old motor.it had a solinoid that I could see moving, can't even see anything on this motor. I had to pull plug wires again. sigh. well thanx for the tip.

Re: motor won't shut off

I have the same problem 1989 Johnson 28SPL and a 1969 33 Evinrude. Everything hooks up but the 33 wont turn off even with the kill switch. I guess there are some differences in the controls.

If it turned off with the controls that were previously used. and the only thing that changed on the motor was the controls... Then it sounds like theres something in the controls. If you have some others... try those What do you got to loose at this point sure would beat pulling wires off one by one.

Re: motor won't shut off

Sprouticus....look on the 90 for a black w/yellow strip wire coming from the power pack. I believe it should be a single rubber connector. This wire is what kills the engine. It goes to the key switch and when the key switch is turned off, the B/Y wire is grounded.

Pull the connector apart and fix a wire to that part of the connector from the power pack. Fix it so you can ground it to the engine block. Start the engine and ground the wire. If the engine stops, your problem is most likely at the key switch. You can do the same thing at the key switch also by connecting a jumper to the terminal at the key switch that the B/Y wire goes to. Hook a jumper to it and with the engine running, touch the jumper to a ground.

Other things to check, make sure the terminals at the key switch are clean, check along the wire harness for the possibility of a broken wire. Make sure the big red plug at the engine is firmly attached together.

Re: motor won't shut off

well, we found the black/yellow wire, and it did kill the motor. I started ripping apart the controls when my friend suggested we take apart that red plug and make sure it was clean. He counted the prongs..........7 male, 8 female, and there was a hole where the 8'th prong should be. we examined the plug on my old engine.....8 prongs.....so we grabed a pair of needlenose pliars and yanked it out and put it in the plug we needed. Engine is now running, and STOPPING perfectly. Thankyou OBJ, and the rest of iboats, once again for saving my day out on the lake, and costly repair bills, and my santitity. Well ..............gotta go boating now!!!! :)
