Motor won't start/spark?

I have an Evinrude Mo# 9422S S/N E07020 9.5HP<br />Not sure of the year, but I inherited it and it has been sitting for a couple years. I have tried to start it and all looks good except that I pulled the plug and there is no spark. Plugs look good. Do I need to check the points and if so, How does the flywheel come off to get to them. Is it threaded on or keyed? Are there any tricks? I only want to get it working for sentimental value and the kids like a ride on the river... No one around my area will touch it.

Re: Motor won't start/spark?

Sorry I can't help you with the year...a pal has my book right now. I assume the flywheel has a three bolt pattern throught a starting pawl? If you remove these screws and procure a suitable puller for it, your flywheel removal is solved. Tell an outboard mechanic in your area that you want it removed, they usually have the right tools. I recommend having the coils checked with a special machine that older dealers might have (I assume your engine is in the mid to late '50s to '70s era) them. Replace the points and condensers with tune-up kits at a NAPA or OMC affiliated buisiness. I recommend (http://www.sea-way.com/) the Sea-Way guys. They'll set you up right. Don't mess with dressing old points and hoping that the condensers will work...it isn't worth the time unless you want to get stranded somewhere!! Use an ohm meter to test the continuity of your spark plug wires. Probably best to replace them too. Note the way the electrical system is placed (especially the coil laminations aligned with the bosses on the stator plate) before your replace stuff. Everything else is fairly self explanatory. Points should be .0020. (there should be a set mark on the cam that trips the points-otherwise turn the flywheel or prop with your foot (after you've removed the spark plugs and eliminate that compression) when in forward gear to rotate the cam until the respective points set you are working with is open as far as it will go (the cam is oval shaped-when the oblong side opens the point arm at it's widest, then set them at .0020. I hope my directions aren't too confusing...good luck!

Re: Motor won't start/spark?

Thanks for your instructions RUDEViking, I will let you know if I get it running or not. The flywheel has 3 machine screws around a center bolt on the shaft. These screws are only 1/2 inch long. Looks like it is keyed and I am looking for a puller. I tried with my little puller and had no luck. If I can get the parts you suggested, i will replace. It may take a couple more weeks to get it fixed as work is busy right now, so business first! Thanks again and look for my posting on the outcome... :)

Re: Motor won't start/spark?

Good Luck with everything. I've been working on a 1961-2 Evinrude Big Twin 40 for some time and neglected to buy a flywheel puller for it (hypocrisy...I think so). At any rate I have a beautiful crack running the length of the flywheel for my caveman efforts with an oak block. I've learned my lesson. As I dispense information, I shall do the same. Minus that major problem that I have, I believe the other tips I've given to be fairly mainstream in mechanic circles. Pray for my beat up old Evinrude...soon it shall rest in someone's parts bin. Take Care!

Re: Motor won't start/spark?

Ok, RUDEViking, I got the puller and while being very careful, the dam thing broke out the middle! Now it looks like I'll be selling parts! NOw I know why no one would touch it...... :( <br /><br />Do you know of anywhere that might have parts? A new flywheel in particular??? HAH! I have to get the rest of the center hub off the shaft anyways. WHo knows, i might find something?<br /><br />RuDEViking, Scoop & rickdb1boat: 9/14/02<br /><br />Have parts in hand and got the center hub off after much patience and "PBblaster" I took pictures, but I am not sure if you can post pictures on this forum. I am getting ready to set the points, apply the new flywheel, and see if the thing will run. I will advise. The saga continues I put all new points, condensors, coils, & plug wires in. I hope it works.<br /><br />If you would like to see the pictures, let me know. <br /><br />Later<br />Stan <br />--------------------------------------------------------------------------------<br /><br />Stan

Can't help you with parts, but it is a 1964 Model!Maybe someone will have an Idea where you can get a replacement flywheel. Sometimes E-Bay has older parts! You might check it out! Also look below! <br /><br />Click Here

Re: Motor won't start/spark?

Stan9305, Sorry to hear about your troubles. I have heard that the flywheels on the older Evirudes sometimes crack (my repair manual has pictures). Most likely the flywheel will be available at your local NAPA autos parts store from their Sierra Catalog. One of the flywheels was used into the 70's. Also, the ignition parts are available from NAPA. Here is a site to get help for that 1964. I am sure that at least one of the people there have dealt with this problem. Don't give up too soon. Here are a few links.<br /><br />The Antique Outboard Motor Club. They have and ask a member board much like this one.<br /> http://www.aomci.org <br /><br />Repair manuals.<br />Copies of the original Evinrude are available from <br /><br />The Ken Cook Company<br /> http://www.kencook.com/kccwww/marinepubs/marinepubs.html <br /><br />After Market Seloc and Clymer Manuals are available from almost any bookstore, Amazon.com, Ebay, or your local library.<br /><br />Here is a helpful site also. They have parts manuals etc, and this section that goes through step by step refurbing old small OMCs with pictures which will look awfully familiar<br /><br />MasterTech.<br /> http://www.maxrules.com/fixtuneitup.html <br /><br />Good luck with everything. I am sure you can get that thing running and have a great time giving your kids a ride on the river.<br /><br />One more thing. Your local OMC dealer will still carry some of the parts. Maybe not the handles or outside case, but seals, gaskets etc. Also there are a lot of place that deal in used parts like.<br /><br />Twin City Outboards<br /> http://www.twincityoutboard.com/
