I've got a transom mount 107lb thrust, 36volt, Motorguide trolling motor. When I run it in 36volt it will run for a little while get hot and shut off. I can hook it up in 24 volt and it will run like a champ all day long. Do any of yall have a clue what the problem might be? I believe the year on the motor is 2000.

Re: Motorguide 36volt problem

Is the circuit breaker tripping and shutting off the motor or is the motor getting hot and shutting itself off. I can't believe the motor is overheating since it is in the water. if the circuit breaker is popping, it may have derated over time and can no longer handle the amount of current it is rated for. Remove the prop and check for fish line wrapped around the shaft. turn the prop by hand to check for binding. You should feel a slight jerkiness but otherwise free movement of the prop. If it turns harder than it should the bearings have tightened up. Have no idea how you are connecting for 24 volts but if the motor is a 36 volt unit, it should not be operated on 24 unless it is built to operate that way. If that's the case, there would be a 24/36 switch on the unit somewhere.

Re: Motorguide 36volt problem

I know I'm digging up the past here, but I am still using the trolling motor and would love to figure out how to fix the problem. I was told by a local guy who works on motorguide trolling motors, that the "module", whatever that is, is bad. But, he told me that he couldn't even get the part. I am wondering if what he is telling me is right or not. He said that the module is getting hot and shuting the motor off. Is there any way possible that the part might exist somewhere? Or is there any way of bypassing this module or making a different module fit?

Why not try MotorGuide customer service. They built the thing. We have no idea what model motor you have. Not all MotorGuides are the same. As for replacement parts, check the MotorGuide web site for repair centers. Once you determine what you need, go down the list to see if any of them have the part. If they don't chances are it is not available and the at this point, the reason should be obvious -- no spares means the originals were junk.
