I am writing for a friend who doesn't have a computer.
He has a 4 year old Motorguide with 82# thrust. The foot switch for on/off has gone bad three times. When it goes out the motor will not shut off properly and makes a buzzing sound. We have contacted Motorguide and they say it is in the switch itself. It is due to water penetration into the switch. They said it is a problem that cannot be remedied because that type of switch cannot be made 100% waterproof.
I was hoping someone out there could give us some help or knowledge on this problem, other than just replacing the switch all the time.
Thanks

Re: Motorguide on/off switch problems

Replace the switch one more time. Then rather than leave the control where it can get wet, make a bag for it to protect it during periods of non-use. You might also take a look at the new switch before installing it and seal all the little cracks and joints with liquid electrical tape. It may also be that the switch simply doesn't have enough current carrying capacity. You could also try setting the speed to the slowest setting before turning the motor on and off. Arcing is more than likely whats destroying the switch.
