Hey All,

I'm looking to buy a bow mount foot controlled trolling motor for my 16' fiberglass boat. I'm looking at either a Minn Kota - All Terrain or a Motorguide model that is comparable. I'm looking in the 40+ lb. thrust range. I'd like to hear from owners of each of the brands. What do you like & dislike about each brand? Is there anything I should look for in a new trolling motor?

Thanks, Craig

Re: Motorguide or Minn Kota???

Hi Craig,

I spent some time researching both, although I was looking for a salt water TM. I went with the MK 36 volt Riptide. They have a 3 year warrantee, there's a promotional give-away through this year, I got a tackle bag with mine. They supposedly have the better break-away system, I liked the composite shaft idea. Here's a couple of links to view, do some searches on trolling motors, reviews, ect, I have so many articles bookmarked.........

Good Luck :D

http://www.bowfishiowa.com/TrollingMotors101.htm

http://www.jimporter.org/reviews/review1.shtml

http://www.bassangler.com/articles/crawford/paul-tm.htm

http://www.wmi.org/bassfish/bassboard/boats_motors/T62350.htm

Re: Motorguide or Minn Kota???

I just replaced my motor guide with a Minn Kota power glide. I really like the new motor and the electric steer is a dream. I also like the built in battery meter. The slide variable speed control is also a nice feature. The only draw back is you have to really use some force to get it in the stow position. I have the MinnKota all terrain on my other boat and it works real good although I wish it was electric steer. Did not like the Motor-guide but to be fair it was on the boat when I bought it and had been used fairly hard.

Re: Motorguide or Minn Kota???

Hey Craig,
My 16' Fisher Deep-V came with a 40# thrust MK foot-control All Terrain. It's my first bow-mount troller and I wasn't sure what I was getting. It runs fine, deploys easily and has zero slop in the steering system. My beef with it (and I probably sound like a whiner to the old-timers) is that it's very demanding to use. It swivels so freely in its mount that, unless I give it constant attention, the boat wanders all over the place. If you take your foot off the pedal, the motor pivots 30 or 40 degrees from where you left it on its own. If there's chop or a wake, it'll pivot 90 to 180 degrees. Even with foot firmly in place the thing requires constant attention to avoid inadvertant heading changes. There's no resistance in the steering system so there's no control 'feel'.

What bugs me is that a simple friction tensioning system in the foot pedal would eliminate most of my complaints. You could take your foot off the pedal for a few seconds to do something else and have the boat stay on course. Yet there's no easy way to add one that I've seen. Another option would be a self- centering spring mechanism on the pedal with trim capability. Got something like that sort-of designed in my head, but don't know if it's worth trying to build.

Without cobbing something up, I think Flahthead's got the answer...a MinnKota power glide with the autopilot option. Kinda pricey (over $600, I think) but probably worth it. Seems strange that MK can't/won't make a design change to correct this drawback...they have friction adjustment screws on the pivots of their transom mount motors. But if everybody was happy with the All-Terrain motors, no one would buy the $600 power glides. Another option, the bow mount Hand-control All-Terrain, might be more satisfactory than the foot control version; but research it first.

Sorry for the long rant. Good Luck.
Bob

Re: Motorguide or Minn Kota???

T.G. I've owned several MinnKota's and currently have a 40lb. thrust Power Glide. I have it mounted on a 13ft. fiberglass boat. The power range is very good as is the solid state foot control. However, I also purchased the Co-Pilot wireless remote control for the motor and am truly satisfied with the control and motor. One benefit of the remote control is that if you have one too many beers and fall overboard, you don't have to swim back to the boat. You simply bring the boat to you! I can't say too much regarding the Motor Guide. I had one several years ago and was not happy with the power range. Other than that; it was ok.

DuPont

Minn Kota! I installed a bow mounted 74# on my boat this past spring. I've whacked it on the dock a few times (HARD!), inadvertently used it as a dredging machine, and run it only in saltwater. Runs perfect!

I agree with all said about the powerguide autopilot MinnKotas, but make sure that 40# of thrust will give you the umph needed for your 16 ft fiberglass. Have you considered a 55 lb thrust? A little more money, but much better than being underpowered, IMO.

I do get turned around very easy by the current, if not paying steady attention to the motor. Not the motors fault, wish I had the autopilot. But the way you decribe yours sounds like theres a problem with it??
