Mounting a fuel filter/separator

I have a new fuel/water separator to install. Is it ok to mount it in the splash well ahead of the outboard? It is a 19' starcraft superfisherman. I like that location because it would be easy to get to. I could drain any water right out easily and see it every time I take out the boat. The gas line comes through right there as well. Yep, that's where to mount it, take your time and mount it so your fuel lines don't kink or bind when you steer the motor. Good Luck!
