Hey guys, long time no post but to make a long story short. Over the summer i had picked up a 16foot avanti tri-hull. after looking to boat over and working on it the rest of the summer it needed a TON of work. it was a big headache.

This past week i came across a great deal from a family friend who is moving. A 1987 16ft Avenger bowrider with a 2.5 mercruiser I/O (120hp) . SOLID boat and came with all the documnetation of every service thats been done. Can eat of the engine. $500!!! couldnt pass this up.

So ive cleaned it up a bit and am turning it into a fish and ski. Fish is definitely before ski! lol ..

My question is, the wood in the transom doesnt cover the entire transom of the boat. I have about a foot and a half on each side. Can i drill into this fiberglass and mount a thru hull bilge for a portable bait tank? and im also installing some underwater lights in this location as well. would this be safe? or should i go through the transom wood?

Sorry if this is a dumb question, this is my first I/O. Thanks in advance for any help!!

Re: mounting electronics to transom.

Usually you can mount to the transom if you properly bed it with some type of caluk. I was just looking at underwater lights and they required HUGE holes which means big leaks... HAHA

I use 3M 5200 or Sika Flex for things that I am not planning on removing. The light i am looking at only requires one mounting hole for a hollow bolt with the wires inside it. the other side is just screwed on. That is behind the surface mounted LED light.

Caulks come in Polyurethane, poly-sulfide and various other forms. I have seen single and two part caulks so the sky is the limit. Sika Flex tends to be the best bet.

the light is a MIU-30 and it looks really bright so I am excited.
