I have just finished redecking and carpeting my boat.
I have 2 Lounge seats I need to re-install.
What is the best method for mounting these seats for security and least water infiltration.

Thanks all

John, can not help you out on your question, but I would like you to remove your business name from your signature area.
That is something iboats does not allow.
Thanks

Are the seats mounted on boxes? I have found that decent L brackets inside the boxes with bolts work best. You can either use brackets whick lets water seep back out from under the seats or use hardwood blocks and srew to them.

Whatever you do you want water to be able to escape. Seal the screws into the dect with 5200 to keep them water tight.

What is 5200 and should I use lag bolts to secure to the deck? The deck is 3/4" Plywood with glass caoting.

Denny,

Thanks for the tip on the 5200.
It seems to me that the screws in the deck might be ok (lags would be better) but the sides of my seats are only 1/2" ply. I am afraid if I "hit the brakes" the seat will simply keep going by inertia. What size screws did you use?

Also did you place the "L" bracket on the sides or on the mounting block on the bottom of the seat. I am abit confused (obvious huh?)

Re: Mounting Lounge Seats

Hi John,

When I redecked my boat, I laid out the seats on the un-fixed deck and marked off where the seats will be. I then installed T nuts from the back side so I can bolt the seats directly to the floor. My bases are plastic and have places to pass bolts through.

Where is the brake pedal on your boat? I haven't found mine yet. I think that if you 'hit the brakes' hard enough rip the seats away, you could have bigger issues than the seats to worry about (like the hole in the hull from hitting rocks or something)

cheers

John,
This is the bench seat I'm refering to,

I screwed the brackets to the deck then to the sides of the bench base which is 3/4" ply covered with vinyl, I used 3/4" long #8 ss screws on the sides and 1.5" #8 screws to the deck, 4 screws per bracket, each bracket is about 2" long.
I used 4 brackets to hold the bench inplace and placed them on the inside of the bench for a cleaner looking job, no problems so far.

eggkr8 - I wish I would have doe that when I put the deck down but alas I did not.

The brakes are, rocks, tree stumps and sand. But you are right I would be more concerned about the big holes than the seats!

Denny,
Thanks for the more detailed description. Tonight is the night so we'll see how it goes.

Thanks again to both of you

Re: Mounting Lounge Seats

John,

I used feet for my lounge seats made out of starboard, I secured the feet to the bottom of the seat (not to the hull) with countersunk stainless screws. I then secured the seats to the deck with stainless screws and 5200 at the tie down points inside the seat. Sorry for the mess on the deck, need to clean the boat, below are the pictures.

Hope this helps.

Re: Mounting Lounge Seats

That is a kewl idea.

I am under huge deadline. I had to repair the suports (like the wood one's in your picture) on both seats last night. I am simply going to lag them into the deck with 3/8 x 2 1/2 galvanized lag bolts and 5200.

I leave for vacation Saturday and I am having problems keeping the motor going at ide (runs ok at 2500-3000 rpms). But i have to concentrate on it tonight and tomorrow night.

This seat install os part of a bigger entire deck rip-out and install. It has taken me a month (everynight after work included) to get this far.

I'll NEED the vacation from getting ready for vacation ;-)

Thanks for the photos. I am not sure I will get to take any but I will try to remember.
