Hi Guys, first question is going to sound stupid, but could you take a look at this photo and tell me which valves my fuel line should run through?

Also, should I place the bulb on the engine side or the tank side?

Thanks as always

You can do it any way you want, the arrows point "IN" and "OUT", Depending on your access, you can have the fuel go in the same side it goes out or run accross if you want, I would put the filter between the tank and the engine. I put mine before the bulb on the tank side and it works fine, but you will hear that it should be after the bulb, I dont think it matters.

Scuda11, I hope you realize that you need to swap one of the brass nipples with one of the plugs! You have the fuel line nipples both on the outlet side of the filterhousing.
Also, don't overtighten those fittings. The TEMPO filter-block is cast and will crack if you over torque the fittings, they are like wedges and will split the casting (firsthand knowledge).
I would also put some teflon tape on the fittings before final assembly.
Good luck!

Hi Boilermaker, yes I did exactly that, thank you very much for the info! This looks right doesn't it?

I think teflon tape is for water lines only. Gas will dissolve it and play heck with your carbs/injectors.

I belive that tape is wrong too. They make a tape for fuel lines, the kind I used was yellow in color.

Seahorse's comments are correct.

Immerse a piece of teflon in a jar of gas and look at it a few days later. It has begun to dissolve.

Teflon now can spell problems later. Use gas-proof locktite instead, or tape dedicated to gas lines.

Actually what is interesting is I had heard the same thing, but the instructions that came with it say teflon tape....should I change it?

I've never heard that the bulb should be before the filter (between tank and filter). I've always heard it should be after the filter (between filter and engine), as close as is reasonable to the engine. Plus, that's the way all of the rigs I've owned (professionally set up), have been rigged.

Loctite 5972 or Loctite 542 can be used on the threads on the Fuel/Water separator. Both will cope with gasoline.

Don't confuse me with the that other poster named Sea Horse.

Teflon tape is normally not recommeded for fuel lines because it tears into small threads when the fitting is taken apart. It is then that the small shards of Teflon tape can enter the fuel system and raise havoc with carbs, injector pumps, filters, valves, etc.

LocTite, Permatex, and others make a pipe dope paste that is recommended for fuel fittings. Just use in sparingly.

I'm a little late but if you are taking things b ack apart, you may want tho think about putting a fuel shut-off valve just before the filter.

I was ablle to get one that screwed right into the threaded fitting on the tank side of the seperator. Total cost... between $5-$10.

This will keep gas in the tank fuel supply line from running into the bilge when changing or emptying the seperator filter.

Thanks guys, I actually don't have any fuel in it yet. So I guess you recommend I take off the teflon tape now and put on some LocTite or Permatex?

Re: Mounting my Fuel Water Seperator

The only time teflon is a problem in fuel lines is if it is put on to heavely & allowed to enter the fuel flow, or tear apart and enter the system. For that to happen, it would have to be installed past the treaded part of the fittings!
As for desolving in fuel>>>NOT! go ahead and insert a piece of teflon into gasoline>>>it wouldn't breakdown in a year.
IT IS RECOMMENMED for this installation because it is an excellent thread lubricant & sealer! It doesn't get squeezed out when tightened properly, as joint compounds and pipe dopes do.

The different color coding of the teflon tape is to distinguish their thicknesses, not their compounds. Gas (as in natural gas) pipe fittings require a thicker tape then water pipe fittings. BUT as far as the teflon breaking down, I have never heard of it from gasoline, or any petrolium solvent.
If its installed properly, it will seal, and protect the joint for years. THATS WHY THEY SUGGEST IT ON THE PACAGE! (Do you think their legal dept. would allow them to advice customers to do something the could be dangerous???)
Just my 2 cents>>>Do what makes you feel comfortable.

Re: Mounting my Fuel Water Seperator

All good advice but if it were my boat I would opt for non teflon sealer.
