Mounting Rodholders on 186 DC

Hi all -
I'm not sure if this is the right forum, so let me know if I should redirect this to a different forum.
I have a 2007 SeaPro 186 DC which I want to configure for some off-shore fishing. I have two existing rod holders in the gunwales (I hope I have this terminology correct). I want to place some rodholders at the back of my boat (stern).
I'm considering a few options:
1) Installing one or two flush-mount stainless rod holders into the gunwale (if that's what the top part is called) on each side of the area where the motor is mounted for a maximum total of four rodholders in this area. The attachment shows some dark black spots in the area I am referring to.
2) Installing 1-inch stainless handrail with two mounts in this same area. The handrail will proceed vertically straight up about 2 feet, make a 90-degree turn over the splashwell area, and then make another 90-degree turn back down onto the other side. I would mount some rail rodholders onto this handrail. I love this idea, but will it be strong enough? It seems like it would be, I'm not planning on catching 200lb fish.
3) A rocket-launcher in the splashwell area. I think I could mount one there.

One of the problems I have is that the underside of the area where I would mount anything is not accessible. I'm leery of drilling into an area that I can't see the underside, and I don't know how thick it is.

Any suggestions, concerns, or better ideas are welcome.

Hello Matt..

I would suggest to not mount anything like a rail without washers/nuts.

Your cap rail im sure is fine to 4200 on some rod holders and screws.

I understand your reluctance of drilling into your deck without knowing if there is wires/etc under that.

I would contact Seapro service and tell them what you want to do and see if they run wires or such in those locations. If not..and you want to go with rod holders ( which I would ) then make sure you Pilot drill at the same angle and direction of your holder. Not just straight down.. but holesaw at that angle..will save you some time.

Re: Mounting Rodholders on 186 DC

Thanks for your response, and sorry for the delay in my own. I tried calling SeaPro and learned tonight that they went out of business last year! Anyway, I have a completely new idea... I have two flush-mount rod holders on either side of the boat in the gunwales. I'm going to have a custom rod holder made that has a 3-foot 1.5 inch OD SS pipe that goes into each rod holder, and then both of these will be welded to a boat-width 1-inch OD SS pipe running perpendicular to these - giving me a place to mount clamp-on rod holders that is completely removable, with no modification at all to the boat! The rear seats won't be very usable, but it's a 19-foot boat, and I don't plan on taking lots of people offshore anyway. Can you think of anything wrong with this idea?

Hello again..

Flush mounted holders sound great..but you didnt tell how your planning on fastening these things.. and 3' extension on top of that seems kinda .. well..tall for for a screw and glue holder..

unless I misunderstand ..

Re: Mounting Rodholders on 186 DC

Hi Dr.,
The flush-mount rodholders are already in the boat from the factory, one on each side of the boat. The idea is that the 3 foot-long tube extend up from within one of the rodholders (which are 8 inches deep), giving a height of 2ft 4in above the gunwale height and be perpendicularly welded to another tube which is 1 inch thick. The other rodholder has exactly the same setup, with the tube extruding from that rodholder perpendicualry welded into the same tube form the other rodholder. This is kind of a bridge across the boat. The beauty in this is that it would be removable and no modification would be done to the boat. But my question is, would the tube be strong enough to handle the span of about 84 inches *and* be strong enough to handle a few clamped-on rodholders? The reasoning for the height is that the angle of the existing rodholders would force the bar across the boat to cross exactly where the motor would be tilted up at it's highest point - and I want to be able to tilt the motor up, should it be necessary. Of course, I could just remove it if I had to do something like that...

Re: Mounting Rodholders on 186 DC

I've decided that I'm overthinking this... I'm going to put two, possibly four more flush-mount rodholders into the gunwales on the boat of my boat and be done with it. I looked the boat over last night and did the math, I have enough room to mount them, and they will be permanent and attractive. Thanks for your time.

No problem Matt :)

Im glad you came to a reasonable solution m8.. :)

The other way ( After reading it 3x ) could potentially have "personal risk factors" if you get me ..

Although .. I do respect your creative thinking in doing something custom .. dont ever loose that ..

With regards YD.
