Mounting Transducer plate to fiberglass boat, glue or screw?

I'll be installing a small transducer mounting plate to my Glastron boat and ? if I should use the screws that came with the plate, or if I should glue/epoxy/silicone the plate to the transom?

I was also told, to reduce spider cracks in the fiberglass, after drilling the holes for the screws, to take a larger bit and make a small counter-sink type indentation in the screw holes to eliminate/minimize spider cracking.

I'll also have to seal the holes for the speedometer sensor but was just going to use some good quality marine caulk/sealer for that.

So, should I glue or should I screw?

If you just glue it, you will pull off the gel coat one afternoon. The glue only attaches to the surface. Seal all the holes!

I read a good suggestion in another forum, to screw a mounting board for the transducer to your boat. Then, if you have to reposition the transducer, you can reposition it on the mounting board and avoid putting more holes in your transom.

I use a piece of acetate/(hard plastic) which I screw and then seal to the transom. In this way I have only two screw holes and I can mount several devices without creating individual holes in the hull for each transducer-probe. You can screw into this plastic as often as you want and if you overdo it, get a fresh piece and put it right back. :)

I used a store bought transom mount plate. I removed the old speedo sensor (3 screws) and plugged them w/sealer. Then put sealer on the back of the plate and the 2 screws holding it in and attached to boat. Then used short (1/2 in.) screws to hold speedo sensor and transducer in the new plate.

Thanks for the suggestions. Now I have to get the boat on the water to make sure I'm sealed up good.
