So im just moving out of my parents house at the age of 19. I need a few pointers of the things i need to change such as my drivers license address, bank addresses and such, because i know i will forget the most important one that will kill me in the end.

I just know i will forget something. So any help on the things that need to be done will help greatly. Thanks to all

Re: Moving out for the first time

I dont know your reasons to move out but can offer the same advice I gave my son. Once you move out you are 100% accountable for YOU and be very careful about signing any contracts. At your age many people get hooked into rental contracts and credit arrangements and get over their head due to lack of experience and then its too late. They have hurt themselves for many years to come because they have RUINED THEIR CREDIT. Dont make any legal commitment you dont have to. Even something like walking away from a cell phone contract for a couple of hundred bucks can cost you many thousands of dollers later when you try to buy a home or new car etc....heads up my man. Dont be a victum of your own lack of experience and never be quick to sign anything untill you fully understand it.

No i have good credit making payments on my car, and fully paying my own insurance, the lease for the apartment is 6 months at a time, also paying my own cell phone, and i stay away from all the credit cards, i watched my parents go thru hell and back because of credit cards. currently im commuting over 55 miles one way to work and the apartment is 1.5 miles from the garage.

Thanks for the advice

Change your address on anything you receive in the mail. That means credit card statements, bank accounts, AUTO Insurance policy (this is VERY important), and all your bills.
Also, if you had to register with any government agency (do they still have Selective Service???) or have any student loans, contact them and change the address. Change your voter registration too.

My other piece of advice is to get renters insurance. If your apartment is broken into or damaged by fire, no one is responsible for your stuff but you. Renters insurance is actually an inexpensive way to keep you from "losing everything" in a catastrophic life event. Also, on the auto insurance side, make sure your agent now knows how many less miles you are driving in a year. It could make a difference. But be aware, your move to a new town could make a difference too. For example, my sister's auto insurance would have doubled if she had rented an apartment in Cuyahoga County, OH as opposed to Lake County right next door.

Good luck.

Make a list of everything you think of when you think of it.

Take the above advice too. It's important and solid.;)

Good luck on your move.:)

One that hasn't been mentioned for address changes is the IRS.

Don't know about USPS but in Canada we can sign up for address change service. The post office will redirect all mail from the old address to the new address for a fee for varying lengths of time depending on your desire.

and i stay away from all the credit cards

You are already WAY ahead of the game then :)

I got into credit debt when I was in college and it's been a constant struggle ever since. Good luck with everything. What are you doing for work?

Unless where you're staying is permanent, leave the address on the driver license alone. Your paren't addr. is your permanent addr. until you settle down somewhere.

If you have access to a kitchen, learn some basic cooking skills. If you eat nothing but fast food it'll cost a lot more & it's not healthy. That's why kids who leave home for college get that "Freshman 15" weight gain. Eating out of cans is cheaper but you'll get sick of it fast. It's not hard-- chop up some meat and vegetables, cook up in a pan with a little oil & soy sauce, throw it on some instant rice and you have a tasty stir fry that's going to be 100% better for you than junk food.

19 was the age I moved out too. Congrats and good luck.

Are you continuing onto college or not? If so there is some specifice advice for that. Congrats on leaving home...seems noone leaves at 18 or 19 anymore as used to be the norm.

When you do laundry that whole seperating your whites from your coloured clothes, dont worry about it unless its brand new, then wash it seperatly, nothing worse than new white stuff turning pink or blue or green.:D

KMK, Like was mentioned before....I dont know the reasons you're moving out. I hope its either college or just wanting to be on your own and out from under your folks rule and leaving them on good terms.

Every thing mentioned above is good and sound advice. I'm 51 now and blessed that my folks are still living and in good health. Even though Pop is 92, he's still sharp. I do not hesitate to ask his advice or opinion on things I'm unsure of. If its a cooking question I'll call Mamma in a heart beat! I'm pretty sure your folks would welcome your questions.

You can read all the books and have all the education in the world...BUT....Theres no substitute for the wisdom of having lived life. Took me a while to figure that one out !

Thats the best advice I can offer.

If you're leaving on good terms with your parents, change the address on the things you can think of and just have your parents create a stack of mail for you and go pick it up once a week. Then just go through the mail they received and change those. Really doesn't take long to catch the things you have missed (junk mail aside). Oh and create a list as you change addresses with places and keep adding to that list, even anytime you 'sign up' for something new. When you move again you'll be able to just rifle down that list and not have to worry about missing anything.

Re: Moving out for the first time

As far as renter's insurance goes, it is a very good idea. Also, make sure you factor in how much ALL the bills are, you will now have utility bills and they can add up quite quickly. I miss the days of being 16 and giving my parents $100 a week. I complained about it then, but now $400 a month doesn't even cover electric, water, phone, cable, and food. The worst thing about first moving out on your own is, you can break down how much you make in a day (for example, eight hours x $15 an hour =$120 a day), and how much you spend at the grocery store. It really stings when you take all week to make the money, and it just disappears so quick. . .

Re: Moving out for the first time

If you are eliminating a 110 mile per day commute then it sounds like a great idea.:D

As far as advice...make sure if you have any valuables or keepsakes back at the folks house to take them with you or put them in a box marked "do not sell in garage sales" LOL it happens all the time.

I lost most of my toys from my childhood when I left for college back in the day...and now that I have two little boys of my own I wish I still had my G.I. Joes, Transformers, and other stuff I have forgotten about(at least my mom saved my matchbox cars LOL:)) Sadly it was all given away or something.

My dad's case was particularly heartwrenching...he got back from Vietnam to find ALL of his Mickey Mantle, Al Kaline, etc rookie cards had been THROWN OUT:eek::eek:

Good luck with the new place and your inherent liberty that goes along with it.

Re: Moving out for the first time

ezmobee - i work for AT&T in the U-verse field, pretty independent stuff and i like it a lot always a challenge. Planning on waiting a while till i get a bit more settled then looking at advancements with them as far as schooling.

mike64 - i can cook pretty well im a country boy so learned the meat and potatoes gig pretty easy

Most of my reasoning to move out is the fact of the drive to work. All the time i spend driving to work has put over 60k on my car in less then a year. All of that time can be spent working and saving the gas money and the wintery drives. And to those who asked whether or not im leaving on good terms with my parents, I am saving the moving truck money and putting gas back in dads tank for letting me use his truck. So there is no hard feeling there other then my mother, Im the youngest. The baby is leaving the nest and she is worried like a mother would be.

Thanks to all those who answered. Much appreciated

Sounds familier...after I 'moved out' as soon as high school was over my folks sold their house and built a new one. They had a huge fire and burned everything I and my older sister ever owned to get rid of it upon the sale so they didn't have to move it. I call it the great fire of 92. I have nothing from my childhood and wished I did.
