mower motor, chipped ring

just bought a new piston and ring set. put the piston in the cylinder and chiped the very edge of the middle ring. by edge i mean where the ring ends, where the two ends of the ring butt up to each other. its just a 17 horse kohler engine for a riding lawn mower. will i be able to use the ring still or do i need to buy a whole new ring set?

what does a new ring set cost? its already apart and will probably cause issues if you run it with tthe broken ring. Or i nthe least you wll wonder about that ring every time you run the mower.

Why did it chip in the first place? Most rings are directional, as there is an up and a down, do you not have a service manual for the engine and just guessed?
