My daughter got an MP3 player for Christmas from my folks. I know that MP3 is a type of file that music is tored on. I know you can download these from places such as Napster for so much a month or per song. Can I convert some Cd's I have to an MP3 and record to her player? Tell me what ya know cause I'm completely dumb on this stuff. Looks like I'm getting old huh? :)

You can 'rip' your CDs, that is convert them from thier native format to MP3 format, with a program like Musicmatch Jukebox (there are hundreds more programs that do it) and save to your harddrive. There is nothing wrong with ripping your own CDs as long as you bought them and are only making the MP3 for your own use.

Ken,I don't know how different an mp3 is from an ipod but my wife got an ipod. Hardly any instructions so you have to go to their web site and download software. After doing that I have successfully loaded over 20 cd's already. It sets up a music library. I just plug the ipod in on usb cable then insert cd into comp. follow instructions , then loads it to library and ipod. Haven't tried to download music from a site yet, one step at a timed:) I also fall into that too dumb old timer club, good luck

I've started using Media player for all my ripping as well. I used to use Musicmatch.. but then chagned over and never looked back... Just make sure you set it to MP3 and not the windows media extension...

My mp3 collection is around the 15k mark, every cd I own is saved as an mp3, very nice when a disk gets scratched up, just make another one.

Does making mp3's with Windows Media Player have any DRM drawbacks?

To keep the cost of the music down you can create MP3 files from web radio. There are radio stations all over the world that broadcast over the web. I use a program called Replay Radio. I capture the programs or music I want in MP3 format on my hard drive. Then you can use a CD burner to create CDs. You can get 12-15 songs per CD if you are going to play them back on a normal CD player. If you play back using a computer you can burn the MP3 files as data and get 40-50 hours of material on a CD. I use this for background music at work.

I also have all my CD's ripped into MP3Pro. I don't even have my stereo hooked up anymore. I bought good computer speakers and I use MusicMatch to rip my CDs and as my player. The reason i use MusicMatch is that I payed the extra $10 after it came out to have free lifetime upgrades. I believe Yahoo or Google has bought MusicMatch.

The iTunes software (Free Download) will import your MP3s and convert them into AAC format which is the format for music that they use on the iPods. If you have a different player, it will probably load by dragging MP3's onto it using a USB port. It is like dragging and dropping files for a directory on your computer.

Once you go MP3, you will probably never go back. they are too convenient.
I buy all my CDs and rip them. I don't download from Peer to Peer sites and so far I have not bought songs from any websites. Just my preference, and my way of supporting the artitists and their rights to make money by making music. Plus I have other family members that make money by writing software and I wouldn't want anyone else to take money out of their pockets by using their software without purchasing it.

I would watch Limewire...a bunch of infected files go around thru any of the peer to peer file share networks.
Rip CDs or look at joining something like itunes..

Thanks for the tutorial folks. I too was ignorant but to ashamed to ask.8)

I thought getting "ripped" meant indulging in adult beverages.
