Re: mpg

MPG is never known until a trip is over and is determined only as an average but dividing fuel used into distance traveled. That number is going to vary greatly depending on load, speed wind and water conditions. While many feel that is the "only" measure of any value, many others (myself ibncluded) prefer instantaneous GPH (gallons per hour) of fuel consumption as provided by a fuel flow monitor. But to make this even simpler, outboard engines (regardless of type) have a tendency to have a fuel burn 10% of their rated HP. Therefore a 50 HP engine will burn about 5 gallons per hour at wide open throttle. Less as you cut back on the throttle setting. For detailed fuel consumption numbers,. go to the Yamaha web site and check the PERFORMANCE BULLETINS. You select the engine, type, boat type and they provide fuel consumption, rpm, propeller used, noise and time to plane numbers. If your exact boat is not listed, select a similar one.

Re: mpg

I never have needed a bigger tank than the 6 I have ,as I just do not make that long of runs.
If I needed to make a longer run I will just take along an extra can of fuel.

I like to turn the fuel over often( burn it and then refill) so it does not have time to go bad.

It all depends on how far you normally run the boat and back,
they do make3,6, 9, and 12 gal portable tanks though and you can always have more than one on the boat

Re: mpg

Please notice also that the Performance Bulletins give your boat/motor's most efficient MPG at RPM's, which won't be at WOT. My boat/motor, according to the Bulletins, has much better efficiency at about 3500 RPM's...I run a 12 gallon main tank and two 6 gallon jerry cans, but we make some fairly long runs between marinas with fuel...and sometimes marinas ain't open for business!...I hate that queazy feeling of,"wonder if I have enough gas"....Get that extra 3 gallon tank so you can relax down the river!:)

Re: mpg

I use mine in the ocean. There are not many places to stop and fill up on the central coast in california, And the place id like to go to is gaviota which is about 26 miles from my nearest drop off point. It seems id need 12 gallons minimum. Thats with going there and coming back only. No searching for fish. unless theres places to get fuel along the way i dont know about.
