reading your response it appears you will need to read the manuals first. You can install it either way but a lot easier with the lower supppored vertically and then drop the upper on.

Take the upper off, marry it up with the lower and fill it with oil. Store....
If you leave the upper on without the lower, both will be empty of oil for the entire winter. I can just see those nice rusty gears and bearings now...
Yeah. You don't have to store the boat with the upper or complete drive at all. I take mine off every other winter for impeller and oil change plus inspection ( we only get about 15 hours a season ). I pull it in the late summer and put it back on in the late spring.
