MR drive shift cable

In process of reassembling MR drive. On the forum there was a comment that the screw at the stern end of shift cable should not be tight but should be able to allow cable to turn and that is what the figure 8 safety wire is for holding the screw without it being tight. Should the cable be able to be pushed through the block? Mine is frozen solid. Wont turn and wont move. I have attached a pic to help show what i am asking about.
Thanks in advance

slide must rotate on the cable core, most like you had water in there at some point and got the aluminum mud packed in there. That also will have a bearing on how well reverse happens

Any ideas as to what can un-seize the cable. I've tried yield and liquid wrench.

Thanks I clamped the cable about a quarter inch from the casting between two blocks of wood. i applied heat and rapped the casting with a tack hammer. I was amazed at how much white powder came out and it finally freed up. The heat did the trick.

At this point, I'd replace the cable. The new cable comes with the aluminum casting, and the hardware up top. You'll be much happier having smooth shifts!
