Re: mtd mower oil question

The first B&S link says syn. 10W30 causes less oil consumption. The second link says Multi-Viscosity oils cause more oil consumption. ??? If you're changing the oil at the recommended interval anyway, you'd never burn enough to make a difference.

Re: mtd mower oil question

LOL...not sure how posting the link to Briggs & Straton's oil recomendation was called hijacking:

http://faqs.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/faqs.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=1419

Did you even bother clicking on the link? Go read my first post again.

It even warns against the high oil consumption for 10W-30.

Maybe you should read your own link.
10W-30 0 to 100 ?F (-18 to 38 ?C) is better for varying temperature conditions.

Synthetic 5W-30 -20 to 120 ?F (-30 to 40 ?C) provides the best protection at all temperatures as well as improved starting with less oil consumption.

Do you understand what the word better means? I guess it's probably over your head, so I'll define it.

1. of superior quality or excellence: a better coat; a better speech.

Face it, you made a stupid mistake and ruined your engine. It had nothing to do with the oil you were using.

This is from an email I just received today from Briggs and Stratton.

"For your conditions, you are correct in using 30W oil for your engine"

Hmmmm!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: mtd mower oil question

All Briggs and Stratton engines call for 10w30 in any summer operating conditions. Straight 30w is obsolete. Synthetic is really helpful in warm weather - Briggs oil temps run around 300-400 degrees, which is really hard on oil.

quote from my second link:

Air cooled engines run hotter than automotive engines. Use of multi-viscosity oils (10W-30, etc.) above 40? F (4? C) will result in high oil consumption and possible engine damage. Check oil level more frequently if using these types of oils.

Here's a quote from your first link, also a Briggs site. Seems like conflicting information. I do believe this is the latest information available from B&S. I've bought quite a few B&S power products over the past couple of years and all their literature has the above statement in them.

Yikes, Not here - every B&S powered mower here comes with a bottle of B/S 30 weight in the crate with the handle and hardware and such.

Re: mtd mower oil question

well, ran the mower the second time since the oil change. As a bit of a info, it's about a 3 year old mower, got it from my neighbour who bought a more powerful one.

Today, second cut after the oil change, spewed lots of blu smoke for about 30 seconds after starting, newer before even saw a whif of blue ever. after I finished mowing, I noticed there was a thin film of oil all over the deck. I thought it was just dirt till i had a closer look.

The oil that came out of it was so horribly dirty I thought anything was better then nothing, hence the castrol 10w40 in it.

I'm still undecided as to what to do with it now.

Sounds like a lot of fun...will have to do that someday. I used to go to Lake Powell all the time but have only gone once in the last 10 years. May be going there this year. Just so much crowded than it used to be!

Yes areas of Powell can be crowded, but there's always places to get away too. It's a great lake. I guide for Canyoneers, look us up if you're interested.

Sounds like you can run anything in a B&S engine. So...if your running it with transmission fluid, should it be Type F or Dexron.:)

And.....if you can't find straight 30 weight on the auto parts shelf grab some Rotella 30 weight. Good oil and you can buy it about anywhere. Big diesels run it for 15000 miles between changes..all i use in my boat too.

Re: mtd mower oil question

Just out of curiosity, I went to the local Lowes to see what oil they carried in the lawn mower section. They had 5 different brands of 30W including B&S 30W and around 4 bottles of 10-30W John Deere Oil.
