Does it do any good to flush my 225 Johnny with muffs and fresh water when finished running in the salt? Boat is in a wet slip in salt water. How about if the engine had a flush plug on it? I've heard that you have to run it for 6 godzillion hours to do any good!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Stalker

Re: muff flush at slip?

nightstalker.....I keep my boat in a slip also and have never tried to flush it with muffs in the slip, but my guess would be that it wouldn't work too good. I don't know about you but I have to put my engines all the way up to get the lower unit out of the water, and trying to run the engine when it is tilted up that far probably won't work, the motor will never run right all the way up,(unless it is injected). I have always used the backflush plug for about 10 minutes or so on each motor while I'm unloading the boat and never had any problems. Even when I used to have motors that didn't have the backflusher and I never flushed the motor out I never had any problems. I'm not saying that you won't nor do I reccomend not flushing, but my 1989 115 that never got flushed except when I ran it before it went in for the season and when it came out for the winter still runs perfect today, the guy who bought it from me in 2000 keeps the boat in the same marina and still doesn't flush it and still no problems, that's not to say that this season it won't blow up. Anyway I wouldn't bother running muffs at the dock, if the engines even run tilted up you'll for sure **** your neighbors off every time. Good Luck.

nightstalker - Fresh water flushing will help to reduce the salt water crud buildup in the water passages. Those passages don't know or care whether the water on the outside of the motor is salt or fresh. Go ahead if you wish - and I would not run the motor with it tilted out of the water. Tilt up - put the muff on & turn the water on - lower down - start motor & flush.

I should have said that was the process I was going to try (raise motor to attach muffs and hose, turn on water, lower engine and run motor for a few minutes).
Stalker
