Before I royally screw something up, can ya help a brutha out with the placement of muffs on this 66 Evinrude? I've been filling up a garbage can, but it would be so much faster and easier if I could just put muffs on this ol' gal. I'm new at all this boat stuff, so I appreciate the help. Is this the location, and would I need to trim the cup because of the proximity to the cav plate?

Also, I know that the plate above that is accessing the exhaust, but for what purpose? Thanks for the help?

As far as I know, you can't do it on that vintage....at least in any practical way.

Others will weigh in and confirm, or deny...:)

As Tim said, you can't use muffs on that engine. They used to make a contraption that you could attach to the water intake on the rear of the cavation plate and run them on a hose, but I haven't seen one of those in 15-20 years, I haven't seen any advertised either. Maybe someone will chime in if they know where you can get one.

Re: Muff placement help

So what would be the purpose of that plate then? The last time I was out, I had a buddy run the boat WOT while I checked the depth of the cav plate (2-3in below surface), and I noticed that water was coming out of that cover as if it weren't sealing 100%. When I pulled the cover today, I noticed that the gasket was torn. I think I remember reading somewhere about a contraption on the intake for a hose, but perhaps this cover can be pulled when running in a can to ensure that the pump is working? Hell, I'm grasping at straws at this point, so any information is mucho appreciated.

That is a cover for the exhaust housing, replace the gasket and see if it seals up if it bothers you. Your best bet is to run it in a barrel of some sort, making sure the water level is well above the pump.

Thanks for the advice. I'll just continue with a bucket for now. Don't want to kill it.

Tempo used to make a flusher for your mtr but I heard they went out of business. Stick with the barrel or the lake.
