Re: muffler

:) I was woundering if that was the correct name for it. In retrospect It's an air filter or something. It's a "box" that goes on the carbs.

Re: muffler

Is it something I should be concerned about not having.

Re: muffler

Boat motors run in a dust free environment so no filter required. I'm thinking they put the air box on to minimize the chance of sucking on object directly into the carb, other than that I can't see them serving any other pupose, they run fine without one.

There are several engine's that you want that air box in place. You can lean the engine out to a serious degree with out it. The larger looper's are in this class.

Re: muffler

A airbox does 3 things:
1) Keeps large debris from entering engine thru carbs
2) Reduces reed noise so engine tad less noisy to customer
3) Adds a slight restriction to airflow, without out it it runs a tad leaner on top end (quickest way to blow up a V-6 looper)

In addition, the motor is tuned for maximum performance by making use of sound waves, both at the exhaust and the intake. Even if all else were equal (it isn't), I don't know of anyone that isn't looking for that 5hp at the top end.

Re: muffler

It is important! It is an air silencer but also deflects a potential backfire flame from catching fire to your engine and boat. I know it is a small chance, but there is still a chance and potential hazard without it.
