I just bout an inboard, and I'm used to outboards, so I have a dumb question that most people I know say why would I want to. I will use the boat primarily for fishing, and I have been around heavy equipment all my life. I like things quiet when possible. I'm already mostly deaf. I have a 350 OMC engine and I'm wondering if I can put a muffler on it without damaging it, or having to rob a bank. I know it will be quieter on the water, I enjoy the solitude out on a lake and don't really like all the loud boats that go by. I've always been happy with a 16 footer with a 40 hp outboard and trolling plate. The kicker motors are just as loud and harder to control the boat with. Now I have this 350 with a jet. I don't see why a regular muffler won't attach but there is a lot of things I don't know. Thanks for any help.

Do you have thru the prop exhaust or thru hull?

ie. Do you have exhaust tips on the back of your boat? Or does it come through the prop?

Ayuh,... While they do make Mufflers for a boat,...
True relief from the noise only comes from getting the exhaust tips Underwater...
It'll still be abit LOUD on plane, but you're limited by the jetdrive...

Btw,... Don't even Think 'bout using a car muffler....

Yes U can Midasize your boat and please DO!!!.I'm with U and no noise on the water.
You can add mufflers if U have the room.You might have to re-route the exhaust but it can be done.And just adding more hose will kill a lot of sound.J

It's a 77 350 (Chevy) OMC motor, and the pipes vent straight thru the transom to about the same level as the jet pump. I've also thought about adding a 90 deg about 3 inches from the transom and down to the very bottom of the boat, but I'm not sure how, or how far I'd have to be from the transom. Right now it's 2 stainless tubes going straight from the engine to the transom and ending basically at the transom. I'm renovating an old Starcraft now and would like to get everything in advance for when I am ready for it. I'm also going to modify the engine compartment some as it is about 6'X6' and takes up the whole back of the boat. Make it sort of hard for fishing. After cussing boats like this most of my life, now I have one. All the 20 to 50 year olds at work, and a one 60 year olds say not to mess it it, the deafening noise is neat.

I've seen a setup where the manifolds are put on backwards.Then the hoses were routed in a U shape with mufflers installed at the front of the motor and stacked on each other.I've also seen a muffler that both hoses went into the same muffler and exited to both sides an H shape.Hope U can understand.That was a very quite boat.J

I can understand it was a quiet boat. I'm trying to understand just what would be needed. And I need to do it on a budget. This is my first inboard. There is a u shaped piece coming out of the exhaust manifold in the front of the engine on both sides. Then I have I think 2" (I haven't measured them) look like stainless pipes to just before the transom, and rubber hoses splicing them to go thru the transom. This is from memory and I need to get to bed for work in the morning so won't go check now. You are saying I only need 1 muffler and run both tubes to it and away from it. Correct? Or do the each have a muffler in which case I don't see the need for the H shape? Been a long day, maybe this will make more sense tomorrow night.

I use these small slip in line mufflers on my inboard:

I didn't want to move the factory outlets and had made major power upgrades to the big block.

OK Jerry I have room behind the block, and have seen mufflers on e-bay with intake on end and exhaust on side. I think (if I can afford) it would be an easy fix. 90 deg elbows, length of pipe, muffler, length of pipe to same hole in transom correct? I just couldn't get a picture of it in my mind. I also have been looking at some tips on e-bay, but they seem to cost more than I have. The inline that tahorover mentioned might be ok too. My wife is already a little upset at how much I'm spending to fix it up. I could have got it runable and safe for under $1000, but keep finding more I want to do to it. But she also thinks silence is golden.
