Muffs not enough?

1964 Sea King (Johnson) 60 hp, v4. Last night hooked it up to the muffs and tried to work on the idle/linknsync.

Problem is, it seems to have a very small water pickup, and muffs don't fit very well. I have clamped them down to provide as much pressure as possible, water is coming out above the prop, but still leaking around muffs. Does not seem to develope enough back pressure to get water into the water jacket

Running it for a couple of minutes at a time trying to adjust the idle (starting between 1200 and 1500 rpm) it seems to get too hot - cannot touch the heads.

Suggestions? Should I be doing all this work on the water? Is there a better way to get water through the engine w/o having to deal w/everyone's wakes while working on it?

Go fill up a clean garbage can. Thats what I do. I dont like using muffs; too loud and always the possiblity of them falling off and me not seeing it.

Just be sure to check the water in the can since it will get warm after a while of running.

First, there was no 1964 Sea king V-4. It would have to be 1963 or earlier, made by Gale. Gale quit making motors with the '63 model run.

SO, assuming you have a '63, muffs won't work on it. As you found out. Stop trying before you burn up the water pump impeller. Or the whole motor. The water intake is a screen on the forward side of the exhaust outlet, behind the prop.

Once upon a time, there was a flushing attachment made by Tempo to fit the motor. But they are about as rare as chicken fangs. I have one, but no chicken fangs though.

If you use a garbage can, make sure the water level is well up above the water pump, which is in the bulge above the anti-cavitation plate. The pump is not self-priming and won't "suck" water up from a lower level.

Thanks F R, been getting conflicting info on the year, but it is a Mont. Ward Sea King, definately V-4, made by Gale - Model #GG18808B.

Ran it in a can tonight, but think I'll spend most of my time working out on the water from now on. Surprising how quickly the water can heat up!

Highangle, Using the muffs, you are pushing water into the water inlet that is used when the motor is in reverse(secondary water pickup). I used to use the muffs on my '58 Fat Fifty, which is the same design as your V-4. Put some tape on the water pickup above the prop to seal it up. Now remove the water pickup screen on the side of the LU, and install the muffs. I used to remove one side of the rubber, for a better fit. Test it carefuly. If the motor doesn't stay cool, go with the garbage can with water. Don't forget to remove the tape before you launch it.

thanks for the input everyone! I found a can big enough to use, so think I'll stick to that when needed.

Tashadaddy: Are the Ken Cook books better than the Seloc? I have been using the Johnson Seloc manual, and most of it seems applicable to this motor. But, if there is something better, it would be usefull.

fyi,read a few posts that mention the water in the barrel getting high in gas oil content ,add to that heat,the impellers can end up with issues,those older engines ,especially the 24/1 oil could screw up a garbage can quick

FR where do you find these fanged chickens??? My darn dog eats too much and a chicken would be a cheaper watch pet ,

I dunno, when I was a kid and my neighbors took off for fishing trips to Canada they hired me to take care of their chickens. They had about 100 of them and shipped eggs. Those danged critters would eat each other. MEAN suckers, they were.
