Muffs questions

Since I'm still working on getting the motor running properly and using the muffs a lot I have a couple questions.

Starboard side of LU:
When idleing warm water comes this top hole (O):
-----------------top hole-----
---------------------O
--------====\
--------==== --muffs go over these vents
--------====/
O-------------------- bottom hole.
/\ water comes out here all the time it stays cold.

Now on the top hole, when I start giving it gas the water stops coming out that top hole. Just wondering is that's normal using Muffs or if something is broke.

And another question. is it safe to run it at top speed using muffs for any amount of time or will that break something?

Thanks!
Carl

Sound like everything is normal. DO NOT run much higher than idle with just the muffs!!!!

Re: Muffs questions

You REALLY don;t want to go much more than idle on the muffs. There is no exhaust back pressure, and its possible to overrev and destroy the motor.

The bottom hole is I think just a drainage hole. Is the upper hole you refer to the tell tale?? Is that hole in the lower engine pan and if you take the cover off is there a rubber hose going from it to the exhaust cover? If so then that water should be cold at first then become warm when the thermostat opens then cool again etc. If it stops at anytime you have a blockage, a bad pump, or you are losing your prime with the muffs on the intake.

No, the top hole I am talking about is about 2 inches up and to the right of where I put the muffs on. It's an old johnson, 71 60 hp (i don't think it has the "tell tale" you are speaking of)

Thanks!

I've done the same thing...reving it on muffs..how do you tell if you damaged anything doing that?

Thanks!

Only time will tell..These engines are not ment to run without back pressure.
